[01] Romanian Prime Minister has met with a team of the International
Monetary Fund
Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has met with the representative of
the International Monetary Fund to Romania, Stephane Cosset, a meeting
devoted to the analysis of the present stage of negociations between the
Romanian authorities and the team of the International Monetary Fund mainly
the budget deficit, level of inflation, cutting down expenses in the state
owned companies. The negociations will end on 11 September when the chief
negociator of the IMF for Romania, Mr. Zervoudakis, will probably announce
a decision regarding the next instalment of the stand-by loan to Romania.
[02] The Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has met with the
representatives of the foreign banks operating in Romania
Merryl Lynch, ING BANK and Dresdner Bank, were represented at the talks at
Victoria Palace and the Romanian Prime Minister talked about the intention
of the Romanian authorities to get loans from the international money
markets in the conditions in which the Romanian economy started recovery.
Mr. Isarescu will also have talks with the representatives of some other
foreign banks and finally a solution will be adopted taking into account
the fact that now we can have advantageous financial contracts.
[03] Romanian minister of transportation has talks with the President of
the Danube river Commission
Now in Romania on a visit Ambassador Helmut Strasser, president of the
Commission of the Danube River, was received by the Romanian minister of
transportation Anca Boagiu who stressed the difficulties that the Romanian
river transport system has because the Danube is blocked in the area of
Novisad by the debris of the bridge bombarded during the last Yugoslav
conflict. Ambassador Strasses said that Brussels will host a meeting on 19
September of the ambassadors that are members of the Danube river
Commission with the aim of finding a solution to the issue.
[04] Visit of the Romanian minister of justice to Turkey
The Romanian minister of justice Valeriu Stoica ended his visit to Turkey
in the interval 2 - 6 September during which he met with his opposite
number Hikmet Samiturg and signed the protocol of cooperation between the
two countries.
[05] Romanian - Ukrainian relations are a model for South Eastern Europe
The Ambassador of the Ukraine to Romania, Yurii Harcenko, estimates that
the relations between the two countries are a model of partnership in South
Eastern Europe. The statement of the Ukrainian diplomat was carried by the
daily CURIERUL NATIONAL. The Ambassador also stresses the fact that as
against 1999, trade exchanges between Ukraine and Romania increased
twofold.
[06] Delegation of the World Greek Diaspora on a visit to Bucharest
At the invitation of the Greek Union of Romania President, Sotiris
Fotopoulos, Bucharest is visited these days by the delegation of the World
Council of Greek Diaspora led by President Andrew Athens. For three days
talks take place with Greek Romanian and Romanian businessmen in the
context of making Romania getting closer to the European Union and to NATO.
Andrew Athens is accompanied by the President of the European branch of the
World Greek Diaspora Anghelos Saklanidis. The delegation was received by
the Patriarch of Romania, His Beatitude Teoctist, by presidential counselor
Zoe Petre and they will have talks with the Prime Minister of Romania,
Mugur Isarescu.
[07] The European Union will finance private companies of Romania
The European Union will give 44 million euros to the private companies of
Romania which need to increase their capital. The administration of the
funds is made by a Spanish company.
The Chairman of the Agency for Regional Development, Liviu Marcu, who
announced the fact, also said that the Government of Romania is giving
handicapped persons non refundable assistance worth 168 thousand million
lei. According to ROMPRES press agency handicapped persons with businesses
are supported by the Government by special programmes which are aimed at
the support of investments, development of business and support of farming.

In the interview the President of the Social Democracy Party of Romania,
Ion Iliescu, said PDSR was preparing a very special programme for the
economic recovery of Romania meant to bring about stability and the
increase of the living standard of the people. Mr. Iliescu said that
Romania needed now an economic programme that should resemble THE NEW DEAL
of the United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt that took USA out
of the aftermath of the world crisis in the thirties.
The REUTER NEWS AGENCY is of the opinion that the main oppnent of Ion
Iliescu in the presidential elections is Mugur Isarescu, a technocrat and
the Prime Minister of the Government, former Governor of the National Bank
of Romania.
[09] CALENDAR
President Emil Constantinescu is in New York for the 55-th special session
of the MILLENNIUM of the UNITED NATIONS General Assembly. The President of
Romania will meet with George Soros ,speaks at the Columbia University, has
talks with the President of Hungary Ferenc Madl, with the President of the
Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Khatami, with the President of FYROM -
former Republic of Macedonia part of former Federative Yugoslavia - and
then he attends the reception which President Bill Clinton is giving to the
participants in the MILLENNIUM session at the Metropolitan Muzeum.
Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman is visiting today the World
Exhibition of Hannover.
Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu meets with viceminister for foreign
affairs of Japan Katsushito Asano.
National Holiday of Brazil is celebrated today also by a reception at the
House of Latin America.
