[01] POLITICS, ECONOMIC and SOCIAL NEWS[02] Press Conference of the National Liberal PartyPresident of the National Liberal Party Mircea Ionescu Quintus said on Wednesday that the nomination of Theodor Stolojan as candidate to the office of President of Romania by the National Liberal Party will be made at the special congress of the party scheduled for 18 August, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The liberal leader said that as far as he knows Mr. Stolojan already signed the request to become a member of the National Liberal Party. The Central Permanent Bureau of the National Liberal Party also decided that vicepresident Puiu Hasoti should gather the 300,000 signatures necessary to Mr. Stolojan to be in the presidential race.[03] Press Conference of PUNRPUNR - THE NATIONAL UNION PARTY OF ROMANIANS - and the ROMANIAN NATIONAL PARTY have signed and sealed their union which is called NATIONAL ALLIANCE. President of PUNR Valeriu Tabara said that the union is the start of a center of national interests of the Romanian people. In his turn the president of the Romanian National Party, Virgil Magureanu, said the union is the start of the union of all center oriented parties for the future elections, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.[04] Mugur Isarescu specifies the terms of his possible candidacy to the presidency of RomaniaPrime Minister says he could run for presidency if he has the support of a large enough number of citizens of this country and if he continues to be an independent political personality. Another condition would be the furthering of the present policy of integrating Romania in the European Union, a programme which is viewed by the Prime Minister as the basis of all ruling programmes. Mr. Isarescu also said his priority is to conclude the present term as he was invested by all parties that are making the present ruling coalition. No comment was made until now and the Prime Minister still does not say when is he to announce his intention to run for President. As is known, reports EUROPA LIBERA - FREE EUROPE in the Romanian launguage, PNTCD and the other parties which are members of CDR 2000 still hope to have Mugur Isarescu as their candidate for presidency.[05] PNTCD - CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL PEASANTS PARTY - dismisses important membersNorica Nicolai, Alexandru Ciocalteu, Sorin Dimitriu and Sorin Fodoreanu were dismissed last night from PNTCD the argument being that they had associated with the liberals in supporting Theodor Stolojan as candidate to the office of President of Romania. It is not clear now whether the four have also decided to join the National Liberal Party or are only supporting the continuation of talks between the two traditional members of the Romanian Democratic Convention - Partidul National Liberal and PNTCD. Details are expected soon.[06] Communique of the National Bank of RomaniaMoney funds saved by the population of this country have increased by 1.5 per cent especially by the fact that ever more more people are buying Ministry of Finance vouchers which are then bought back by the Ministry of Finance at a certain interest rate which goes into the pocket of each and every buyer. The National Bank of Romania also notes in the communique that these vouchers were preferred by customers which thus led to the dimishining of deposits in the banks of this country. The same communique also notes that net foreign active funds increased by 16 per cent as the second instalment of the International Monetary Fund loan was sent to Romania to which added are the loans of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.[07] CALENDARMeeting between the PNL candidate to Presidency Theodor Stolojan and the representatives of the Social Liberal Initiative at the Senate of Romania at 14:00.PDSR holds a press conference at 13:00 at the seat of the Party. Press conference organized by the company that bought TEPRO IASI in 1998. The company is ZELERARNY VESELI and the press conference takes place at Hilton Athenee Palace. In the interval 10 - 15 August the town of Targu Mures hosts the Ninth International Conference of Magyar Language and Culture on the theme TOGETHER TOWARDS EUROPE-THE ROLE OF THE MOTHER TONGUE AND OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN EUROPE AND IN THE WORLD. This conference is taking place outside the borders of Hungary for the first time. Department of owners as part of the Romanian Press Club holds the General Assembly of the members. The subject of the meeting is the issue and problem of press distribution in Romania. In the towns and villages of Mioveni, Topoloveni, Curtea de Arges, Campulung Muscel and Pitesti of county Arges the CARPATI folklore festival is taking place in the interval 10 - 15 August.
