[02] Press Communique of the Presidency of Romania
A press communique of the Presidency of Romania which was received by RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI refutes all the affirmations in the newspaper JURNALUL
NATIONAL and adds that the two pages of the newspaper claiming to be a
balansheet of the four years of presidency of Emil Constantinescu are
nothing but a reprint of calumnies of the same newspaper and of the weekly
ROMANIA MARE about the President of Romania, his family and his team. Among
others the communique reads: "... it looks like a new offensive against the
President of Romania. Now when we are actually living in the electoral
campaign atmosphere without the President attending or participating as he
is not seeking another mandate this new offensive is nothing else but a
mirror of the panic of those that notice in anguish that the President does
not stop fight against the Mafia like groups that are again trying to
acceede to power... " reads the communique from the Cotroceni Palace
received and broadcast by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
[03] Candidacy of Theodor Stolojan will not bring about any alteration of
the policy of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - says spokesman

Mr. Pascu says that the fact that Theodor Stolojan has announced his
candidacy for the office of President of Romania will not alter in any way
the objectives of the main oposition party of this country; what might be
changed is only a number of elements that are related to electoral tactics.
In as far as they are concerned PDSR have their own person for the office
of Prime Minister and in case this party will have the decisive word after
elections the name is Adrian Nastase who is the first vicepresident of
PDSR. It is him with the main opinion, in case PDSR wins elections, for
Mugur Isarescu to continue his obligations heading the Cabinet of
Bucharest.
[04] Bucharest Town Hall negociates for loans to start modernization of
infrastructure
Bucharest General Mayor Traian Basescu says negociations are under way for
a loan worth 300 million USD for the building of passages in three
congested traffic areas of the city. The money comes from Europe.
[05] Open letter to the President and the Prime Minister of Romania
The Chairman of the Committee for Education of the Chamber of Deputies,
Anghel Stanciu, sent a letter of protest to both the President and the
Prime Minister of Romania asking them to intervene when the budget is being
altered this year in order to allot necessary money to scientific research
including decent wages to the people working in this domain of activity.
[06] Anniversary of ASEAN
On the occasion of 33 years since the creation of ASEAN the heads of
diplomatic missions of ASEAN member states in Bucharest offered a reception
at the World Trade Center during which the ambassador of Indonesia said
that the creation of ASEAN in 1967 had contributed to the economic, social
and cultural progress of all countries in South East Asia by the promotion
of regional peace and stability.

Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has a meeting with the representatives of the
Romanian Democratic Convention as part of which he makes known his position
regarding the presidential race in Romania in the fall.
At the Palace of the Romanian Parliament in the hall of the PUNR
parliamentary group the signing takes place of the protocole of alliance
between PUNR and PNR. The new party will be called NATIONAL ALLIANCE.
Official meeting of the representatives of UDMR - Union of Democratic
Magyars of Romania - with those of PNL - the National Liberal Party - at
the invitation of the latter.

In 1601 Mihai Viteazul - Michael the Valliant - was murdered by hired
assassins at Campia Turzii.
Birth of Ioan Lupas in 1880 the politician and historian who alongside
Alexandru Lapedatu created the National History Museum of Cluj.
In 1919 birth of violin player Lola Bobescu who has been living in Belgium
for a long time.
