[01] Ceremonies on the occasion of the 400-th anniversary of the
Unification of the Romanian States under the rule of Michael the Brave
On the occasion of the 400-th anniversary of the Unification of the
Romanian States under the rule of Michael the Brave, Romanian President
Emil Constantinescu awarded the National Order of the "Star of Romania",
the knighthood rank, to the flag of the 'MRchael the Brave' Brigade 30 of
Guard. At a ceremony on Tuesday, the Romanian president pointed out the
Romanian Army's position as promoter of the country's Euro-Atlantic
integration. The president was awarded the dragon sword of the Guard
Brigade officers, symbol of military courage. Similar ceremonies were
reported in Sibiu, Craiova, Constantza, Pitesti and Slobozia. RADOR
[02] Joint session of the Senate and House of Deputies
At a joint session on Tuesday, the Senate and the House of Deputies adopted
the regulations for the National Council designated to examine the archives
of the former Securitate. The council is expected to operate under
parliement control and the Law 187/1999 allowing access to personal files
and disclosuring the Securitate as political police. The parliament
appointed a 11-member board to co-ordinate the council's activity during a
six-year mandate. The chambers rejected the article mentioning possible
donations in support of the council's activity.(RADORR
[03] Church leaders support Romania's medium term development strategy
At a ceremony on Tuesday, the Romanian church leaders signed a declaration
in support of the country's medium term development strategy also
expressing their support of Romania's EU integration. Participants included
Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu, Romanian Christian Orthodox Patriarch
Teoctist, Roman Catholic Archbishop Ion Robu, Greek Catholic Archbishop
Lucian Muresan, and representatives of the 16 religious cults legally
recognised. House of Deputies speaker Ion Diaconescu, Foreign Minister
Petre Roman, and Eugen Simion, the president of the Romanian Academy, also
attended the ceremony. RADOR
[04] Local budget financing for local elections
The president of the Central Election Office, Magdalena Dumitru, announced
that the local election spendings should be provided by local budgets
according to Government Order 241/2000, article 1, paragraph 2. The local
budgets for the year 2000 should also include provRsions to address the
spendings during the local election process. RADOR
[05] 94% of the COMCEH SA in Calarasi sold to an Italian company
At a ceremony on Tuesday, the State Ownership Fund (FPS) sold 94% of the
COMCEH SA in Calarasi to the Italian Papermil company. According to the
deal, the Italian company is to cover a half of the 9 million euro contract
in 30 days while the other half should be paid in the next 12 months. The
Italian company ruled out restructuring programmes or lay-offs among the
estimated 700 workers of the COMCEH SA. RADOR
[06] Policemen suspended
The Interior Ministry asked the Military Attorney's Office to suspend the
policemen involved in the attack against Constantzan journalist Valentin
Dragan. The groupe includes Colonel Vasile Luca, Lieutenant Colonel
Constantin Vizadea and Majors Marian Saragea and Marian Lopotan. As the RRA
reports, the investigators failed to finalise their enquiry as, at the
defence's request, the journalists involved refusedRto co-operate. Police
commander Ion Carlig expressed his regrets about the incident. RADOR
[07] Working contracts abroad for miners in the Jiu Valley
Some 1,500 miners in the Jiu Valley are to get employed in Israel as part
of a programme initiated by the Romanian Labour Ministry (MMPS). The
programme is to be finalised by September this year. After an interview
carried out by the selection commission, the first 40 miners are expected
to leave the country in four weeks. Other working contracts for miners are
expected in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates while other miners
may get jobs in Hungary. RADOR
[08] Media campaign in support of the 9-th edition of the annual meeting of
the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly
A media campaign was launched at the Parliament Palace on Thursday in
support of the 9-th edition of the annual meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary
Assembly planned in Bucharest between July 6-10. Participants included
Vitali Evseev, Deputy Secretary General of the ORCE PA, Gheorghe Stan,
Deputy Secretary General of Romania's House of Deputies and chief
commissioner of the group preparing the meeting, and Nadia Ionescu, the
head of the Media Department in the House of Deputies. RADOR
