  • [01] Valentin Dragan case

    Romanian President Emil Constantinescu expresses his deepest concern about the case of Valentin Dragan, the Constantzan journalist who was attacked by a group of policemen. According the statement of the Romanian Presidency, the attack against journalist Dragan, correspondent of the "Cuget Liber" newspaper in Constantza, is unacceptble for an institution who should ensure the security and protection of citizens. The president ordered an accurate report of the case by both Interior and Justice Ministries. He believes that the attackers should be punished as soon as possible in order to prevent the proliferation of similar cases. RADOR

    Romanian Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica ordered the Supreme Court of Justice's Attorney General's Office to open an enquiry into the case of Constantzan journalist Valentin Dragan. The minister said that, in case a person was found guilty, that person should be taken to court. According to a communique issued by the ministry's Media Department, the Attorney's Office ordered a military prosecutor to travel to Constantza and carry out an investigation. RADOR

    [02] Senate proceedings

    At its session on Monday, the Romanian Senate adopted a series of gonvernment ordinances on transport matters along with the strategic plan of infrastructure development for the International Airport of Otopeni. The senators rejected the reports by the mediation commissions on the law ensuring the security of classified information, and the draft law on the status of foreign citizens living in Romania. The Senate also adopted the ordinance designed to adjust the 40 million euro contract aimed at replacing the old TAROM planes - a project financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB). RADOR

    [03] House of Deputies proceedings

    At their session on Monday, the deputies adopted the articles in the draft law to approve the Government Ordinance amending and completing the law on salaries and rights of the judges with the Supreme Court of Justice, and lawyers. The deputies also adopted a series of changes into the law on war veterans, invalids and widows. The final vote is expected during a special session of the chambre. RADOR

    [04] Appointment

    According to an order issued by the Romanian transport minister, the former head of the Cabinet's Control Department Ovidiu Grecea became the chief of a similar department with the Trasport Ministry. RADOR

    [05] Communique issued by the Romanian PDSR - PUR democrat social pole

    The democrat social pole in Romania, including the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) and the Romanian Unity Party (PUR), expresses its protest against the intervention of the Attorney's Office with the Court of the City of Bucharest who dismissed the political alliance between the two parties for procedural reasons. A communique issued to the press says that, in case the decision will prove politically motivated, the Romanian democrat social pole is ready to submit a complaint to all international bodies addressing such matters.     [06] Agreement between General Motors and the National Agency for Regional Development

    At a ceremony on Monday, General Motors Corp. and the National Agency for Regional Development signed a 50 million dollar five-year co-operation agreement. The document includes import and export deals, technology transfers and training arrangements. The US Ambassador to Romania James Rosapepe said the agreement proved the growing investments the Americans were making in Romania. RADOR

    [07] Romania tops the Central and East-European textile and fabric exporters to the EU <P ALIGN=JUSTIFY> Romania comes first among the Central and East-European countries exporting textiles and fabrics to the EU. The Romanian textile and fabric exports were estimated at 2.4 million euros last year. The announcement was made by Dietmar Stiel, a German expert in management and marketing visiting Romania following an invitation by Romania's Office for economic assistance. RADOR

    [08] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu on a visit to Brussels

    While on a visit to Brussels yesterday, Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu attended a meeting on issues concerning the Romanian institutionalised children. Participants in the meeting included Baroness Emma Nicholson, European Parliament raporteur, World Bank director for Romania Andrew Vorkink, European commissioner for EU integration affairs Gunther Verheugen, and Fokion Fotiadis, the head of the European Commission Delegation in Romania. Mugur Isarescu told a press conference that the Romanian government will further concentrate on the efficient spending of funds still available along with funds the World Bank provided for social assistance. The government will also consider fundings from other financial institutions for the special progrmmes the government was taking into account. Another meeting with EU and international financial institution officials is planned on June 6 for an action plan including all the measures designed to improve the living condition of the institutionalised children. The prime minister's talks with NATO Secretary General George Robertson concentrated on issues concerning Romania's NATO accession. EU Commissioner Verheugen pointed out the positive evaluation of Romania's record on EU integration matters while stressing the need of further reforms. RADOR
