  • [15] CALENDAR </UL> <HR SIZE=3> POLITICS, ECONOMIC and FINANCIAL NEWS Cabinet adopted the emergency ordinance completing the bill on local elections The Cabinet adopted the emergency ordinance for the alteration and completion of the bill for local elections. At the same time the Executive decided that the money necessary be taken from the fund of reserve of the Cabinet and then money be given back by Prefectures and local councils as well as by the municipality of Bucharest. RADOR

  • [01] Parliamentary committees finalized the debates for the draft bill regarding State Budget

    Parliamentary Committees for budget, finance and banking of the Chamber of Deputies and of the Senate on Thursday finalized the debates of the draft bills for the state budget and for the budget of state social insurance for the year 2000. The experts of the two committees and the representatives of the Ministry of Finance will work out in the next few days the report to the two legislative proposals. After finalizing technical details the report will be sent to the permanent bureaus of the two chambers and then debated by the Plenum of the Romanian Parliament. RADOR

    [02] Senate modifies Bill 42 for 1990

    The Senate adopted the draft bill for passing emergency ordinance of the Cabinet no. 17 for 1999 which deals with the alteration and completion of Bill 42 for 1990 in connexion with the honoring of the hero martyrs and the rights of their followers, the wounded and the fighters for the victory of the December 1989 Revolution. The document introduces a new system of granting allowances which are thus much increased. The persons that suffered permanent injuries and were mutilated in the fights and battles during the Revolution receive an allowance worth 2.7 million lei per month. All the allowances are added to any other kind of revenue the person might have. RADOR

    [03] MPies started debate on Articles of the legislative proposal for the alteration and completion of the Broadcasting Law

    Articles were adopted regarding freedom of expression and the responsibility of information, on programmes that may endanger development of under-age persons, cultural responsibilities, audiovisual publicity, the regime of property in the domain of broadcasting, limits of monomedia and multimedia concentration, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [04] PNL - National Liberal Party - signed the Protocole of the Romanian Democratic Convention - CDR

    PNL are of the opinion that the alterations of the bill on electoral elections are absolutely correct and solve the important problems for the organization of the local elections this year. The President of PNL, Mircea Ionescu Quintus announced he signed the protocol of the CDR - Romanian Democratic Convention - with PNL, the CDR being a coalition among civic and political parties and organizations. The document provides among other things for the abstention of parties that have their candidates on separate lists from any pretense and/or activity in connexion with the Alliance. The Protocole was signed by the leaders of the four political parties and next week it will be submitted to the vote of the civic organizations, formations and alliances,members of the convention.     [05] PSDR - Romanian Socialist Democratic Party - seeks alliance within the social democracy movement of this country

    President Alexandru Athanasiu of PSDR announced on Thursday as part of a press conference that his party stood for alliances within the social democracy movement of Romania - meaning the Democratic Party, Alliance for Romania, Social Democracy Party of Romania - that will soon be presented with programmes with this aim in view. At the same time PSDR stands for a ceiling of five per cent during the future local elections in as far as local cousellors are concerned and it also stands for a twenty per cent cut in the number of local counsellors.     [06] Ministers of transportation of Romania and Armenia signed the protocole of the Inter-Government Commission whose debates concluded in Bucharest

    Romanian and Armenian ministers of transportation Traian Basescu and Robert Nazarian signed the protocol of the intergovernment commission and have agreed to organize economic missions in and to both countries in an interval of six months at the latest. Cabinet Minister Basescu said that for a good development of bilateral relations needed was the implication of businessmen in the private sector and of the state companies in the process of cooperation and development of collaboration between the two states. In his turn the Armenian guest said that he already presented to the Romanian partners projects in which they could take part such as the building and laying out of the gas pipe-line Armenia - Iran and a refinery design and building as well as the exploitation of oil and gas deposits on the territory of Armenia.     [07] Statement of the President of the Romanian Development Bank, Bogdan Balthazar

    B R D - Romanian Development Bank - received for the second year in a row the award for Central Europe offered by the prestigious group EUROMONEY PUBLICATIONS. The award is proof of the fact that BRD is considered to be the best Romanian bank by that group. Mr. Balthazar added that for the achievement of the objective of increasing the segment of market which is occupied by the Bank and its access to the really big banking operations is also the integration of B R D in the group SOCIETE GENERALE, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [08] Earthquake in the area of Vrancea

    Earthquake of a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale in the area of Vrancea, on Thursday morning at 03:11. The tremor was felt in Bucharest with an intensity of 4 on the Mercalli scale. No material damage was registered. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI broadcast data about the tremor from the Institute of Bucharest and reported the quake occured at a depth of 120 kms. in Vrancea, central eastern Romania, at an intensity of 5 - 6 on the Mercalli scale. RADOR

    [09] Protest march of specialists of research and design institutes of Bucharest

    The Trade Union Federation of specialists of research and design institutes of Bucharest organized a protest march in Bucharest yesterday as part of which the participants marched along the embassies of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Canada and Germany. The protesters forwarded complaints in which they write that if there are job opportunities in any of the countries which are represented they would be more than willing to fill in the forms and sign on the dotted line. Stress is laid on the fact that immigration is out of the question, what the protesters want is contracts for a limited period of time.Before going to the embassies, the Trade Union members went to the Presidential Palace of Cotroceni and forwarded a complete dossier with all letters and documents written in the last ten years in which they describe the precarious situation of research and design in this country. A similar dossier will be given the Government of Romania as well. RADOR

    [10] Seminar on the theme ADMINISTRATION OF PUBLIC ORDER IN THE MULTIETHNICAL AND MULTICONFESSIONAL AREAS

    Thursday morning at Miercurea Ciuc, county Harghita, the seminar unfolded on the theme ADMINISTRATION OF PUBLIC ORDER IN THE MULTIETHNICAL AND MULTICONFESSIONAL AREAS. The seminar was organized by the European Center of Ethnical Studies and Social communication of the Romanian Academy, the Gendarmerie Command of county Harghita and the radio programme TRADITION AND CULTURAL ASSETS ON THE ROMANIAN TERRITORY which is broadcast by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The talks stressed the necessity of a more efficient collaboration among the institutions of the state which are responsible with maintaining public order, the local communities and NGOs. The representatives of the Gipsy communities have asked that Police officers be also selected and trained from among them. The initiative of the Home Ministry was appreciated to have each and every county represented in its education establishments which in the future will increase representation of minorities in the structure of the Police.     [11] Brussels - meeting devoted to the examination of the fulfilment of objectives of the national programme of Romania's accession to NATO

    Examination of the stage of fulfilling the national objectives of the national programme of accession to NATO was the theme of the meeting on Thursday of the 19 ambassadors of the Alliance and a Romanian delegation led by foreign minister Petre Roman. The message of the NATO Ambassadors to Romania is encouraging and supportive - underlined the Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman at the end of the meeting. Among the questions answered by the members of the Romanian delegation were also those referring to buget money to defense and priorities in this domain, the ways and means by which Romania supports the democratic process in Serbia as well as the follow ups of the elections this year on the present economic policy of Romania.     [12] Cluj - Napoca hosts the GAUDEAMUS 2000 Fair, the programme LECTURA

    Cluj Napoca hosts the inaugural edition of the Gaudeamus 2000 Fair, the programme LECTURA organized at EXPO TRANSILVANIA by the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION and the regional station of RADIO CLUJ. The event enjoys the participation of 34 of the most representative publishing houses of the country. Besides traditional activities which take place during the book fair the GAUDEAMUS 2000 cultural event is also meant to make readers express their opinions about book production and distribution. Everyday numerous writers, authors and critics are present in front of the audience during round tables, colloquia and seminars also involving officials, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR
