  • [01] Involvement of German businessmen in the Romanian economy has increased dramatically, Germany coming second investment-wise

Representatives of foreign companies that have investments in this country will continue to cooperate in the economic domain with companies of Romania despite the fact that legislation and fiscality do raise problems for foreign business. Western European businessmen that met at Sinaia, in the mountains last weekend, are of the opinion that these two aspects have to be solved so that Romania have real chances to be integrated in the European structures in the shortest time possible. The nomination of Romania among the countries invited to negociate accession to the European Union is seen as a challenge. HANNS SEIDEL foundation gathered directors general and executives of a number of German companies as well as decision making officials of Romania. One of the participants, quoted by ROMANIA ONE Television Station, said that, we quote: " Romania is important from the geo-strategic point of view. The implication of German businessmen in the economy of Romania increases dramatically and this is why Germany is second in point of investments in Romania ". The development of business infrastructure and the harmonization of economic and political aspects will smooth down asperities and will make exagerated attitudes dissapear. Of 100 German companies that are operating in Romania, 70 are of the opinion that this country has positive economic prospects. These companies are determined to continue their activity despite problems raised by legislation and fiscality. The Sinaia meeting reviewed partnerships in the last ten years, new opportunities for their expansion having been found. RADOR

[02] Economic task-force group designated by the Prime Minister of Romania in order to verify the correctness of tariff increases

Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu designates an economic task-force group to verify the correctness of tariff increases by various public companies and the way their financial resources are used. Government officials which are quoted by MEDIAFAX specify that the Cabinet is not against tariff increases but the public companies must demonstrate that they cut down expenditure and excessive number of employees. [03] Romanian beggars are not to be found in London, the United Kingdom

Romanian beggars in London, who were the subject and object of sustained press campaign are no longer to be found in the streets of the British capital city. The latest regulations regarding sanctuary in Britain funadamentally change the statute of the persons seeking asylum in that country, reports ROMANIA UNU TELEVISION. The new regulations stipulate for the distribution of persons seeking sanctuary in various provinces having already pre-established hostels. According to old regulations cases used to be solved during intervals up tp seven years; according to new ones the cases must be solved in a week at the most. Great Britain was popular due to its generous conditions which now are no longer so generous. Mrs. Barbara Roche, a secretary of state with the Ministry of Home Affairs of the United Kingdom, has said the following: " My message to the persons who think of not so well founded requests of sanctuary and who would be willing to pay a lot of cash to smugglers in order to get to this country is the following - DON'T ! IT IS NOT A GOOD INVESTMENT FOR YOUR MONEY ". Beggars were sought and found with great difficulty in London: they were all of British citizenship. Of the 170,000 requests of sanctuary which are pending settlement the share of Romanian citizens is very small. Radu Onofrei who is the Romanian Ambassador to London said: " There were 1015 requests of asylum in the UK of Romanian citizens in 1998 and their number increased to 1985 last year ". British authorities have no idea where are the Romanian gipsies now. According to some they would in Cambridge, according to others they had flown home by TAROM but the Romanian Air Transport Company TAROM denies having flown back any Romanian citizen refused sanctuary in the UK this year. [04] Mugur Isarescu and Ivan Kostov, Romanian and Bulgarian Prime Ministers, are asking their opposite numbers of the European Union and NATO members to speed up the process of unblocking traffic on the river Danube

In a letter sent to opposite numbers of the European Union and NATO members, the Romanian and Bulgarian Prime Ministers are requesting the speeding up of the process of unblocking navigation on the river Danube. Both Prime Ministers wrote in the letter that it is Romania and Bulgaria that suffer as the bridges are not repaired after the debris are cleared and not the regime of Belgrade; more than that, EUROPA LIBERA comments, the Yugoslav authorities are getting money following the blocking of the river in the sector they control, as written by the two Prime Ministers in their letter. Yugoslavia is practically using the Franz Ioseph channel plus the partially cleared sector of the river which it controls and thus is does exercise a political control as it decides which country can and which cannot use that river sector, this in short meaning sanctions against the reighbouring countries. The Prime Ministers of Romania and Bulgaria write in the letter that sanctions against Yugoslavia become less and less efficient while losses of the two mentioned countries are more and more significant, which are added to the negative impact on a social plan and that of environmental protection. The Romanian and Bulgarian Prime Ministers insist that the reestablishment of free navigation on the river Danube be treated separately from the problem of sanctions against Yugoslavia. RADOR
