CALENDAR
President Emil Constantinescu is attending the opening of the regional
Conference of Central and Eastern Europe on the theme JUSTICE, FORCES OF
ORDER, SOCIETY and the STRUGGLE AGAINST CORRUPTION. Attending and
participating are 130 officials of 20 countries as well as representatives
of important international organizations.
The PNTCD parliamentary group of the Chamber of Deputies in collaboration
with the National Trade Unions of the Romanian Farmers are organizing the
launch of the volume AGRICULTURE OF ROMANIA IN THE PAST AND TODAY.FUTURE
PROSPECTS. STRATEGY OF DEVELOPMENT OF ROMANIAN AGRICULTURE IN THE THIRD
MILLENIUM.
Weekly session of the Government of Romania followed by the briefing of the
spokesman of the Cabinet.
Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu meets Mrs. Emma Nicholson, Baronness of
Winterbourne, first vicepresident of the Committee for Foreign Relations,

President of Romania meets Prime Minister
President Emil Constantinescu met on Wednesday with the Prime Minister of
our country at the seat of the Cabinet. On this occasion, according to the
Press Bureau of the Presidency, talks took place on the request of a number
of distributors to increase prices to the population. At the same time the
issue was tackled of merging departments of the Cabinet with the aim of
increasing their efficiency, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR
[01] Decree signed by the President of Romania
The president of Romania signed a Decree for the assigment of the following
as Judges with the Supreme Court of Romania: Gabriel Victoria Barsan,
Florica Glodean, Ion Jumanca, Edita Lovin, Veronica Carmen Popescu, Zenovia
Mariana Carmen, Petre Railean, Luana Stancu, reads an info from the Press

[02] Plenum of the Council of national minorities of Romania
The Seat of the Government of Romania hosted the Plenum of the Council of
National Minorities of Romania. The representatives of the 17 organizations
of ethnic minorities talked about the alterations which they wish to be
made at the Emergency Ordinance no. 26 which in its turn altered the status
of the associations and foundations. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI
the representatives of the minorities wish that a difference be made
between the already recognized statute of minorities of tradition in this
country and those organizations of imnmigrants that have come to Romania of

[03] PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - does not agree
with the increase of prices of gas and natural gas
PNTCD does not agree with the proposal of the minister of industries and
commerce Radu Berceanu according to whom an increase should be operated of
40 per cent of the prices for gas and natural gas said the President of
that party, Ion Diaconescu, after the weekly session of the leadership of
that party. Ion Diaconescu also said he already talked to Prime Minister
Mugur Isarescu and they have agred that only an increase by VAT be applied
which is already included in the draft budget for this year. It was also
decided that the Cabinet work out a strategy of altering Bill of Local
Administration which would be debated and passed by emergency ordinance,

[04] The budget, finance and banking committees of the Romanian Parliament
decided to increase allowances for agriculture
The two committees decided on Wednesday to increase allowances for
agriculture by one thousand billion lei. Minister of Finance Decebal Traian
Remes opposed this action, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, according to
which the MPies decided that the sources for this boost be established by
both the initiators of the increase and the minister of finance. RADOR
[05] Setting up of a special money fund for public roads
Minister of transports Traian Basescu met with the trade unions and
employers of transports and signed a protocole regarding the setting up of
the special fund for public roads by prefacing today's Cabinet session
which discusses the inclusion of the five per cent tax of public roads in
the price of gasoline. RADOR
[06] Privatization of CONEL will not start this year
Minister of Industries and commerce Radu Berceanu said on Wednesday that
the privatization of CONEL will not start this year. According to RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Berceanu attended the opening of the largest and most
modern PECO oil station of Romania in the town of Targu Jiu. The Cabinet
Minister also met with officials of the coal industry in the area. RADOR
[07] US Congressmen take a stand at the economic losses of Romania
following the blocking of the river Danube
Eight US Congressmen express in a letter to President Bill Clinton their
serious concern at the economic losses suffered by Romania following the
blocking of the river Danube by the debris of the bridges destroyed by NATO
bombardments during the conflict in Yugoslavia. The US Congressmen agree
that Romania which manifested a clear pro NATO attitude during the conflict
is suffering losses worth 800 million USD all the more so that the Yugoslav
President has delayed intentionally the repair of the bridges. RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI mentions that foreign minister Petre Roman who was a
guest of one of the programmes of that Radio channel said he nurtured the
hope that President Clinton will exercise his authority with a view to the
more rapid deblocking of the river Danube, for the resumption of the river

[08] European Union grants importance to the protection of the environment
in the process of accession of Romania
The initiative of creating a group of work to assess accidents at Baia Mare
demonstrates the importance which the European Union attaches to
environmental protection and the issue in the process of negociations of
accession of Romania to the European Union, said Tom Garvey who is the Head
of the Working group for assessing the polution accident at Baia Mare as
quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The group was set up by Margot
Walstroem, European commissioner for the environment in the wake of her
visit to Romania which will end in the report assessing the damage brought
about by the accident and the ways and means to prevent this kind of
accidents in the future. RADOR
[09] Regional Conference of the Central and Eastern European countries
against corruption
In the interval 30 - 31 March under the high patronage of president Emil
Constantinescu Bucharest is hosting the conference of the countries of
Central and Eastern Europe against corruption GLOBAL FORUM 1 initiated by
the vicepresident of the United States Al Gore. An information bulletin
received by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI from the US Embassy in Bucharest
mentions the delegation of the United States is led by Ambassador James
Rosapepe. The info bulletin mentions that vicepresident Gore thanks
president Constantinescu and the Romanian government for the initiative of
organizing this conference. RADOR
[10] Accord of cooperation between the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING
CORPORATION and MAGYAR RADIO
The Press Center of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation hosted the
ceremony of the signing of the accord of collaboration between us and
MAGYAR RADIO. By this accord the two radio organizations are mutually
supporting the trips of their reporters for programme-making and feeds as
well as with a view to exchange of experience. The two sides are mutualy
supporting the regional stations for professional training and will
cooperate for scientific research, restauration and exchanges of materials
from central sound archives that have historical and cultural value for the
respective country. The accord was signed by Andrei Dimitriu, President -
Director General of the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION and HAJDU
ISTVAN, President of Magyar Radio, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
