CALENDAR
Plenum session of the Chamber of Deputies.
Plenum session of the Commission for Agriculture of the Senate to debate
the budget.
As part of the meeting of the Council for General Affairs of Brussels,
Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu hands over to the President of the European
Commission, Romano Prodi, the strategy of economic development on a medium
term of Romania accompanied by the Political declaration of support of the
parliamentary parties of Romania. The Romanian Prime Minister will have
talks with the special coordinator for the pact of stability, Bodo Hombach,
with the European commissioner for economic and financial issues, Pedro
Solbes Mira, with the head of the Department for economic and financial
isues of the European Commission, Giovanni Ravasio and with Emma Nicholson
who reports on behalf of Romania for the European Parliament.
Valeriu Stoica, state minister, minister of justice, is making an official
visit to Slovakia, at the invitation of his opposite number of that country,
Jan Carnogursky.
Solemn meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania on the
occasion of the international Day of French speaking nations at the seat of
the Romanian foreign ministry, at 11:30.
United States ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe is making in the
interval 20 - 23 March a trip to Iasi, Piatra Neamt and Bacau. At Iasi the
United States Ambassador meets with Metropolitan Daniel and he will have a
press conference at the seat of the Orthodox Metropolitan Church at 13:30.
Weekly press conferences of the following political parties: PNTCD at 10:30
at the Palace of the Romanian Parliament, UFD at the seat of that party at
noon.

The delegatgion of the European Commission to Romania invites all those
interested to the launch of the new series of round tables on the theme
EURO - A TOPICAL REALITY, EURO - THE SOLE CURRENCY OF THE THIRD MILLENNIUM.
The Finance Ministry launches a new series of bonds in hard currency
through the intermediary of the National Bank of Romania.
Today and tomorrow the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Clive Martin together
with a group of businessmen who intend to set up a business and financial
centre in Bucharest are making a visit to our capital city.
OWZ Bayern Munich together with the Romanian National Council of Small and
Medium Sized Private Companies of Romania are organizing seminars of
training for the management of hospitals; the courses and classes are
taking place everyday from nine to five at the Lebada hotel complex of
Bucharest.
Rehearsal for the lyceum graduation exam is taking place starting today all
along this week; the subjects are given to the students on CD - ROM.
The group of social dialog is organizing a round table on the theme of the
ecological accident of Baia Mare, north western Romania.
At the Poetry Home of Paris, France, ( La maison de la Poesie ) anniversary
of the Romanian national poet Mihai Eminescu with the participation of
Romanian actors who are giving a recital.
In Venice, Italy, Zamfira Barzu of Iasi is opening an exhibition at the
Small Gallery Correr, between 20 - 30 March.
Recital in honour of the National Day of Greece, at the Romanian Atheneum
tonight at 19:00, at the Auditorium.
Opening of the festival BACH 250 years at the MIHAIL JORA Studio and
Concert Hall of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation.
The federation of the Jewish Communities of Romania and the Jewish
Community of Bucharest invite all those interested to attend the
traditional PURIM 5760 holidays at Templul Coral of Bucharest.

POLITICAL, ECONOMIC and FINANCIAL NEWS
[01] Statements of Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu
Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu is in Brussels to take part in the debates of
the Council for General Affairs of the European Union, reports RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. As part of the debates the PM of Romania will present
the strategy of development of our country on a medium term which will be
the basis of negociations for Romania's accession to the Union. The draft
regarding clearance of the river Danube of debris of bridges bombed which
are blocking navigation on the river is examined by the European Commission
both from the technical and from the financial points of view. The European
Union will not cover the costs of this project in total which is 24 million
Euro while 15 per cent is covered by the states members of the Danube
Commission. Premier Isarescu insisted that Romania which has the largest
river fleet in the area is the state most affected by the destruction of
the bridges and added that until now no reparation has been paid for the
losses suffered.
[02] President of the Alliance for Romania political party Teodor Melescanu
about the future elections in Romania
Mr. Melescanu said he will not be the promoter of a dirty electoral
campaign but he will make public all truths he knows about countercandidates,
although they might be all uncomfortable for the person or persons running.
Mr. Melescanu added on Sunday in the town of Ploiesti that local elections
are the first opportunity for runners of his party who until now did not
participate in any election contest, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
[03] Christian Democratic National Alliance debates
Bucharest hosted debates of the Christian Democratic National Alliance
which by its Political Forum designated candidates to the offices of mayors
of 17 municipalities that are county residences: during the same session
Corneliu Turianu, senator, was elected vicepresident of the Party. The
president of the Alliance, Victor Ciorbea, told a reporter of RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that his party will merge with the Liberal Democratic
Party of Nicolae Cerveni and with the Liberal Monarchist Party led by
general in the reserve Ionescu Galati.
[04] Meeting of the Association of tenants
The chairman of the Association of tenants of nationalized dwellings Eugen
Plesa said everybody in his Association was unhappy with the uncertainty
facing this social group. The Association members are asking for measures
of protection and are demanding to be received by the Chairman of the
Senate, Mircea Ionescu Quintus, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
[05] Cooperate Citizenship awards by Bucharest Business Week
ANTENNA ONE TV announces that Bucharest Business Week awarded prizes to
companies that had the greatest contribution in helping less favoured
categories of Romania. The award ceremony was also attended by President
Emil Constantinescu. This sixth edition of COOPERATE CITIZENSHIP gave
awards for best programmes to the benefit of society, for the most creative
social project and for the most efficient organization of a community
programme.
