  • [01] 1 December, the National Holiday of Romania

    Capital city Bucharest and all the other cities of Romania hosted various events and manifestations devoted to the National Holiday of Romania 1 December. Participating and attending have been high officials, representatives of public local administration as well as a very numerous audience. The central place was the town of Alba - Iulia which in 1918 had been the stage of the Union. RADOR

    [02] Reception offered by the President of Romania at the Cotroceni Palace

    The traditional reception offered by the President of Romania on the occasion of the National Holiday of Romania was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, politicians, men of culture and personalities of the Romanian public life. President Emil Constantinescu spoke about the significance of Union Day and stressed the fact that for the Romanian people more than half this century was represented by war and dictatorship. The President also said that in the last ten years Romania has started democratic progress and added the following, we quote:" Now a month before the year 2000 and ten years after the collapse of communism we should all in good faith look at the full half of the glass which we raise to celebrate our National Holiday. Decentralization of the Administration, restitution of the lands, modernization of the system of taxes and improvement of the pension system make up for some drams in the full half of the glass if you will. To all this we should add the firmness and consistency with which Romania takes further action for its integration in the European and Euro-Atlantic structures. By offering facts we have obtained facts. The independence, sovereignty, unity and peace of Romania are not questioned " - said President Emil Constantinescu quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The President of Romania made an appeal to unity saying that the successes of Romania are the result of our unity while shortcomings are the outcome of lack of unity. " It is today, on the National Holiday of Romania, that appreciation should be expressed to all friends of Romania for the support and trust granted during all these hard years and I wish to thank the citizens of Romania for their efforts to overcome difficult moments, moments of despair and mistrust. I believe that we are all duty-bound to observe everything that unites us". RADOR

    [03] The eighth meeting of the presidents of the European Parliament with the Presidents of the Parliaments of the countries that wish to join the European Union

    Wednesday in Brussels conclusion of the debates of the eighth meeting of the presidents of the parliaments of the countries that wish to join the European Union. Romania was represented by a delegation led by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Ion Diaconescu and Petre Roman, President of the Senate. In the Communique adopted at the end of the debates the participants, according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, agree that negociations should start with all six applicants while the results of the process are wholly in keeeping with the efforts and merits of each and every participant. Ion Diaconescu and Petre Roman are quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI to have said that the meeting confirmed the democratization and transparency of the process of enlargement and added that the point of view of Romania in this matter was well understood and had the expected response.     [04] Romanian - United States diplomatic contacts

    Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, secretary of state with the Foreign Ministry of Romania is in the USA for official talks after which he goes to Canada to continue dialog with officials on the North American continent. While in D.C. Mr. Ungureanu met with special counsellors of the United States secretary of state, Madeleine Albright. Discussed until now have been the situation in the Republic of Moldova and the Chechn crisis as well as best ways in which Romania establishes cooperation with transatlantic partners, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. Referring to cooperation between Bucharest and Washington in as far as strategic partnership is concerned Mr. Ungureanu told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, we quote: "Strategic partnership is by far one of the chapters which are extremely significant for our foreign policy. We cannot say now that Romania is just a footnote of the problems under discussion in D.C. On the contrary I have noticed the concern of the hosts for Romania to have its own SUCCESS STORY". RADOR

    [05] President of UDMR Marko Bela met with the high commissioner of OSCE for issues of the minorities Max Van Der Stoel who made a visit to Romania

    Marko Bela of the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania met with the high commissioner of OSCE for minorities Max Van der Stoel during his visit to Romania. The guest will draw up a report after his visit to Cluj and to Bucharest where he had talks with the representatives of the Magyar minority. UDMR leader said he talked with Van der Stoel of aspects linked to multicultural activities among which the right of minorities to have education in their own mother tongues. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the sides talked of the possibility of having Magyar as a tuition language at the Law and Economy higher education institute of Cluj and at the Pharmacy and Medicine Faculty of Targu Mures and the Music Academy of Cluj in the future.     [06] The 45-th session of the UEO Assembly

    A delegation of Romania led by Academician Gabriel Tepelea is in Paris for the 45-th session of the session of the UEO Assembly. In an interview to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Academician Tepelea said the main point on the agenda was the inclusion of UEO into the European Union. Mr. Tepelea pointed to the address of Javier Solana in the first day of debates which was very important as it tried to clear all aspects related to the link between the two organizations, EU and UEO, which is its military wing which must merge with the first by absorbtion or melting.
