[01] Plenum of the two Chambers of the Romanian Parliament
In its plenum of 17 May the Chamber of Deputies adopted two draft laws for
amending Government ordinances no.50 of 1997 and 65 of 1994 both of them
referring to the accounting and chartered accountants activity.The Plenum
of the Senate witnessed political statements according to RADIO ROMANIA

[02] President of PNTCD about Cabinet issues, the Presidency and UDMR
The President of PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - Ion
Diaconescu said that the present Cabinet in its first year of activity
succeeded to maintain balance within the Coalition and in its relations
with the Parliament of the country. During yesterday's press conference Mr.
Diaconescu said " the analysis of a year of activity of the Government is
made taking into account the tough present realities " adding that the
Vasile Cabinet was faced, on the one hand , by the demands of the Trade
Unions and on the other, by the conditions imposed by the international
financial organizations, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. Referring to
the statements reading that the President of Romania would be involved in
solving diverging stands between PNL and PNTCD Mr. Diaconescu said that
information is not officially confirmed and that according to the
Constitution of the country the President of Romania does not have any
party policy. The spokesman of the Party, Dr. Opris said that one regrets
UDMR Congress heard " strident voices" claiming autonomy of the Magyars of
Romania and necessity of altering Article One of the Constitution. "What is
commendable is that these declarations defying common sense and truth are
not found in the platform-programme of UDMR" underlined spokesman Remus
Opris. In his opinion Magyar minority is well defined in the context of the
other minorities in this country and enjoys all rights deserved. PNTCD
considers that reelection of Marko Bela as President of UDMR is a guarantee
of the fact that the Union will continue to be a correct partner of the
present Coalition. RADOR
[03] Presentation of the text of censorship motion of PDSR against the
draft law for speeding up reform
In a joint session of the two Chambers of Parliament on 17 May the motion
of censorship was presented against the draft law for speeding up reform.
The motion is initiated by PDSR with the support of PRM and PUNR , Greater
Romania and National Unity of Romanians parties.According to RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI the motion of censorship reads that the Government resorts to
this action of assuming responsibility before Parliament in order to hinder
opposition voice their stand regarding measures of speeding up economic
reform in the sense of correcting, improving , supporting or rejecting
these measures. It is also considered that the Cabinet keep as secret the
contents of the agreements with the IMF and some conditions included in the
agreement with the World Bank which it already accepted although familiar
with negative impact of the afore mentioned on the people of this
coutry.According to Constitution the motion of censorship will be debatged
in a joint session of the two chambers Thursday 20 May, starting 09.00. If
the motion of censorship is passed the Cabinet is dismissed and if it does
not pass the Law of speeding up economic reforms is passed. RADOR
[04] Prime Minister Radu Vasile congratulates Marko Bela for reelection to
the office of President of the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania.
Prime Minister Radu Vasile sent a message of congratulations to Marko Bela
on his reelection to the office of President of UDMR, RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI reports adding that the Prime Minister appreciates the role and
work of UDMR in the Cabinet wishing President Marko Bela much success in
his activity for Romania's democratization. RADOR
[05] UDMR at home and abroad according to statement made by Marko Bela
UDMR supports NATO military action in Yugoslavia as it believes that
ethnical cleansing should not be accepted said President Marko Bela to
RADIO KOSSUTH BUDAPEST adding: " Romania has been and continues to be at
crossroads. We have not overcome economic and social crisis to say nothing
that general elections take place next year. On the other hand this region
too must see some changes after the tragedy of Kosovo. The attitude of the
international community with regard to treatment and settlement of ethnical
issues should be changed. The policy of UDMR can be characterized by
continuity as our basic interests, values and principles have not changed.
UDMR is united and we will take action in the future as well for the
bettering of the situation of Magyars in Romania by political means which
does not mean that if the situation here changes we should not take action
in other ways as well.It is possible that in the next period of time UDMR
have more initiatives in the international arena. RADOR
[06] PUNR - ROMANIANS NATIONAL UNION PARTY - rejects statements of
extremist leadership of UDMR
PUNR rejects the very grave statements directed against Romania and the
Romanian people by representatives of the extremist leadership of UDMR at
the recent Congress of the Union at Miercurea Ciuc, reads a communique
signed by President Valeriu Tabara and quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
According to the PUNR communique these statements , quote" belong to the
rethoric of a chauvinistic, ultranationalistic and extremist AntiRomanian
organization". PUNR brands as condemnable the lack of reaction of
representatives of PNTCD,PNL,PD and ApR who were present at the debates of
the Congress. At the same time PUNR announces that it will make use of all
legal means to reject the very serious accusations of extremist UDMR
leaders and that it will bring to court UDMR for having offended Romanian
people. RADOR
[07] PNTCD wants to declare pope John Paul 2-nd as the world personality of
the century
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI specifies that PNTCD Parliamentary Group will ask
Parliament to pass a decision by which Pope John Paul 2-nd be declared the
world personality of the century. The proposal belongs to PNTCD MP Ioan
Vida Simiti.
[08] UFD - Union of Right Wing Forces - press conference
UFD will not participate in the voting process of the censorship motion of
the opposition says Varujan Vosganian, president of UFD although he favours
neither the law of speeding up economic reform nor the motion of the
opposition. With regard to the Congress of UDMR Mr. Vosganian says that the
final statements in which the terms" domestic selfdetermination " are
excessively used do not hanour UDMR which has been part of the ruling team
and has enjoyed due advantages following this participation and which now
wants to alter the Constitution, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR
[09] Communique of PDSR
According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, PDSR considers that the Cabinet and
the present majority coalition have the moral obligation to make public all
provisions of the agreements with the IMF and with the World Bank so that
all follows ups on the economy of Romania could be assessed.According to
press statements of PDSR vice president Adrian Nastase the provisions of
the agreements with the IMF and with the World Bank have turned into a real
calamity for Romania; in order to obtain results imposed by the IMF, the
communique also specifies, the Cabinet governs by ordinances while
legislative instability drives investors away and Romanian economy is fused
to IMF financial support. RADOR
[10] Cabinet -Trade Unions dialogue continues this week
Negociations between the Cabinet and the Trade Unions are more intensive
this week under the threat of a general strike notes RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI. On Wednesday Trade Union leaders will meet leaders of
political parties and of parliamentary groups supporting the Cabinet after
having met with representatives of the government for negociations
connected to applying revenue taxes, issues of education, health and
research which are domains lacking proper financial means. Trade Unions
stand for Cabinet support in Parliament for passing a number of laws among
which that regarding statute of civil servant. It is the results of these
meetings that guide attitude of Trade Unions with regard to unleashing
general strike. RADOR
[11] Spontaneous strike at Barza-Brad
About 1900 employees of Barza-Brad mine ceased work spontaneously Monday
morning and a number of them headed by Trade Union leaders went to the town
of Deva, to the seat of the National Company for Copper, Iron and Gold
protesting delays in salary payment which has already been done on a
fragmentary basis. Following talks with Director General Iosif Campean, as
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports,salaries are being paid today so that the
miners resumed work in the second shift. RADOR
[12] Romanian-Venezuelan talks here in Bucharest
Romanian secretary of state with the Foreign Ministry, Mrs. Elena
Zamfirescu met with Venezuelan deputy foreign minister Juan Valero Briceno
for talks on finding new ways of strengthening ties on a bilateral basis
and in the international arena. Venezuela will soon send official
invitations to the President of Romania and to the foreign minister of our
country to tour that Latin American country, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI

[13] Ion Iliescu is visiting Japan
The President of PDSR Ion Iliescu is now touring Japan for lectures on the
situation in Romania now after 10 years since the Revolution of December
1989. According to a communique received from PDSR -the Social Democracy
Party of Romania- Ion Iliescu will visit SONY, banks, industrial and
trading institutions. Mr. Iliescu will also grant interviews to Japanese
radio and television stations, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR
[14] International conference of newly set up or restaured democracies
Bucharest is hosting the working meeting of follow-up mchinery of the third
international conference of newly set up or restaured democracies, informs
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The U N Programme Bucharest resident took the
floor and stressed the efficiency of government in the newly set up
democracies which usually "suffer because of fragile social and economic
sectors". RADOR
[15] Scientific French-Canadian-Romanian workshop
Bucharest is hosting for two days the second edition of the Romanian-
French-Canadian workshop " Electrotechnical materials " organized by the
Politechnic Institute of the city and the Electrotechnical Research
Institute informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI with the participation of
specialists of Romania, France,Canada and Italy. RADOR
[16] Decisions regarding SIDEX Galati are postponed
President of FPS - State Ownership Fund - Radu Sirbu said that
international contest is to be organized for selecting future management of
SIDEX Galati. Prime Minister Radu Vasile in his turn ssaid no decision in
connexion with SIDEX is taken on Monday, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.

[17] ING BARING'S about poor economic performance
Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia are using the Kosovo conflict as excuse for
their own poor economic performance, writes Philip Pole, ING BARING'S
economist for developing markets in the Financial Times. As quoted by RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Mr. Pole is of the opinion that economic prospects of
these countries had already been unstable when the conflict in Yugoslavia
broke out. The author adds that developing markets in Central Europe are
influenced by western economies which are the main partners of the coutries
mentioned in the first place. RADOR
[18] Privatization prospects of ARO four wheel drive producing plant
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs that Peugeot will give its answer by the
end of this month regarding privatization of ARO four wheel drive producing
plant in the town of Campulung. RADOR
