[01] Economic and privatization commissions consider inadequate to conclude
contract with Bell Helicopters
Minister of Finance Daniel Daianu heard on Tuesday at Senate by economic
and privatization commissions has kept his point of view concerning
contract with American society Bell Helicopters. Nicolae Vacaroiu president
of Commission for privatization and Viorel Catarama president of Economic
Commission have declared they support position of minister of finance and
consider unseasonable concluding contract with Bell Helicopters. RADOR,

[02] Debates in Senate's Agriculture Commission
Agriculture Commission of Senate gathered on Tuesday for debating serious
problems of Romanian agriculture. President of commission Trita Fanita has
criticized way in which Ministry of Agriculture and Food(MAA) has rendered
profitable wheat and barley of this year harvest noticing Romanian wheat by
cause of lack of subsidies became 50 dollars more expensive than wheat
produced in Hungary and Bulgaria. At the same time Trita Fanita has accused
MAA leadership for it did not know to prevent serious effects of drought
after which were registered damages of about 3,000 billion lei. That is why
president of senatorial commission Trita Fanita has requested conjointly
dismissal of MAA leadership and has announced Commission members prepare a
package of proposals which is to be handed over to Government and which
stipulates mainly taking again of subsidizing agriculture. RADOR, August

[03] Press conference of PDSR
The Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) requests immediately
gathering of Parliamentary Commission for SRI (The Romanian Intelligence
Service) in order to analyse captain Constantin Alexa's statement done for
press. PDSR senator Doru Ioan Taracila specified in Tuesday press
conference it would be analysed implications of Francisc Baranyi's case as
well as necessary steps for threatenings addressed to Romania's security to
be solved by proper bodies. PDSR also requests presentation of content of
secret agreements between UDMR (The Democrat Union of hungarians in
Romania) and present power. PDSR leaders have also presented a letter
addressed to Prime-Minister in which it is requested renunciation to
enclaving country by building up a state university in Hungarian language.
Referring to Agrostar trade-union's actions PDSR leadership sustains they
are justified taking into account power's lack of interest towards
situation of agriculture, absence of protection measures for farmers and
fact that meteorological prognostications although announcing drought were

[04] Working conflict at Suceava branch of Uranium Company Bucharest
On Tuesday a working conflict burst at Suceava branch belonging to Uranium
Company Bucharest. For two hours between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. employees
interrupted their work requesting increase of gratuity granted on the
occasion of Miner's Day which had been fixed at only 200,000 lei, assurance
of financing mining works till the end of the eyar and arrival of a
commission from Government Control Body which to analyse financial
situation of the branch and importance of uranium in national plan.
Constantin Nita trade-union leader from mining sector Crucea has declared
this working conflict remains open till solving the three demands. RADOR,

[05] Doctors without salaries
Doctors from trade-union MEDISAN from Ambulance Service of Bucharest city
protest and wish to call society's attention to an unprecedented fact in
Romania: postponing payment of salaries in their medical unit. Moment is
much more serious because it is developing on a background of abuses in
salary politics of some state institutions: Parliament, Presidency,
Government, FPS (State Ownership Fund) it is noticed in a statement.
Employees from Bucharest hospitals received on Monday and Tuesday their
left salaries - Ministry of Finance sustains quoted by BBC - but in
territory problem was not solved yet. Budget of health assurances has
immense deficits and Ministry of Finance affirms it could execute by force

[06] It was built up Inter-ministerial Committee "Eclipse '99"
At Astronomical Institute of Romanian Academy took place on Tuesday a press
conference during which were given details concerning strategy of promotion
tourism in connection with total sun eclipse from August 11 1999. In
opinion of minister of tourism Sorin Frunzaverde total eclipse represents
for Romania a chance of re-launching both tourism and economy even at a
macro level and what it is more important re-launching of Romania's image

[07] First Romanian made liquid gas tank
The delivery papers for the first Romanian made ship for liquid gas
transporrt were signed in the port of Constanta on Monday. The "Danube Gas"
is entirely made and equiped in the Turnu Severin ship yard for a German
company. The shipyard is due to make other two ships of this kind for the
same company. RADOR, August 12
[08] Trying to repair draughts damage
The public utility for land improvement said in a press conference on
Tuesday that they had great possibilitites to do irrigations but that the
fartmers did not request such services. There are contracts for irrigating
over 1 mil ha. but they irrigated only 292 thousand ha. Those that want
these services can apply to the territorial administrations public utility
and if they cannot pay the 30% advance they can pay the whole price after
the crops are sold. Abotu the lack of irrigation devices on 1.7 mil. ha.
the representatives of the public utility criticized the Finance Ministry
for refusing to sign the guarantee for an import of irrigation devices from
the US. This import was due to be paid in farming products on a five year
period. The credit by the US Exim Bank has a 0.5 interest and if signing
the contract is delayed the credit might be lost, with serious effects on
the cultures already affected by draughts - the representatives of the
