  • [01] Talks between the Goverment and the Trade Unions

    At Victoria Palace a group of government members, led by Victor Ciorbea, met on Tuesday the representatives of the union confederations Cartel ALFA, CNSLR Fratia, BNS si CSDR. The union members obtained from the government the promise that FPS is allowed to submit a form letter on Wednesday to the agencies around the territory in order to forbid any dismissal until the restructuring programme is implemented. The union leaders also requested that the activity of the management teams of the enterprises that are to be closed should be analysed. They decided that the cheking committees of SOF which deal with coruption and abuses of the managerial teams should also include union representatives. RADOR, August 14

    BNS trade union asked that the minimum wage should be of 250,000 lei beginning with August 1st and that is to be raised to 300,000 lei beginning with October 1st. They asked for income tax decrease for wages between 350, 000 and 750,000 lei. BNS also requested the increase of the net income with 35,25% on the third term and a further 5% is to be added on the fourth form of this year. RADOR, August 14

    [02] Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea Met Representatives of the Romanian Oil Company and of the Unions

    Prime Minister Ciorbea met representatives of the Romanian Oil Company and of chemical and petrochemical workers' unions at Palace Victoria on Wednesday . Some aspects of a new national oil company founding were discussed. The new company will process crude oil from the internal production and some quantities from abroad so that it may provide the accomplishment of the whole process of extraction, refining and distribution. RADOR, August 14

    On Wednesday night, the prime minister also met representatives of union confederations "Cartel Alfa", CNSLR "Fratia", BNS si CSDR, in order to discuss the problems raised by the wage indexation and wage tax - the same radio station reports. Concerning the indexation, according to the latest estimations made by the government in December, wages will reach the real salary level of January 1997. That means an indexation of 25,1% and a decrease of income tax of 2% are to be applied on wages starting with August 1st. An indexation of 6% is due to occur starting with October 1st. By these figures, wages will reach their real level of January 1997 - union leader Bogdan Hossu stated. RADOR, August 14

    [03] Petre Roman Talks about Ciorbea Cabinet's Reforms

    Speaking about the reform initiated by the government led by Mr. Ciorbea, Petre Roman, president of the Senate and of the Democratic Party, stated at a press conference in South-Western Romanian town of Caransebes that "there is no connection between the turning off the taps, through which the resources are being exhausted, and the social-democracy or the Christian- democracy but there is a connection with the common sense. The reform has to continue, losses can be accepted no more, since there is no one able to cover those gaps". RADOR, August 14

    [04] PDSR Supports the Programme of Industrial Restructuring

    PDSR supports the programme of industrial restructuring, but it considers that this must be done by applying the rules of the market economy and not by decisions typical to a centralized system. RADOR, August 14

    [05] The Former Sovereign of Romania Has Visited Suceava

    On the second day of his private visit in the Northern district of Suceava, the former sovereign of Romania, Mihai I and his wife Ana of Bourbon-Parma, went to the Sucevita Monastery on Wednesday, being expected in the afternoon at Bogdana Monastery of Radauti, where they are to meet representatives of the local authority and citizens. The meeting is due to take place at 17:00. RADOR, August 14

    [06] American Investments in Romania

    SOF together with the bank company Shapiro Bank Ltd. from the USA organized Wednesday a press conference at the Oil Industrialists' Club. Shapiro Company has won the auction organized by SOF for selling the 40% shares stock of Biofarm Company. Until year 2000, the buyer will provide investment of about 50 million dollars. At the same Oil Industrialists' Club firms which SOF would continue talks with for selling 40% shares stock held by SOF at Romcim Company have been established. There are five bidders: four foreign firms from Germany, France, Great Britain and Spain, and Gribco International from Romania. All of them have been addmited to the negociations. RADOR, August 14

    [07] Benjamin Netanyahu is to visit Romania

    The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will make a one day visit to Bucharest on September 18, followed by three days in Hungary. Netanyahu will meet in Hungary his counterpart Gyula Horn and the president Arpad Goncz. They are to discuss the bilateral political and economic relations between Israel and Hungary. Mr. Netanyahu will round up his tour with a two day visit in Austria. RADOR, August 14
