  • [01] Romanian Senate Speaker Will Participate in the Third Congress of the European Socialists in Malmo, Sweden

    Bucharest - On Friday and Saturday, Romanian Senate speaker Petre Roman will participate in the third congress of the European socialists due in Malmo, Sweden. He has been invited in his capacity as president of the Democratic Party, which is part of the ruling coallition in Romania. Petre Roman will attend the plenary session on the topic "A Europe, a world, a struggle for human rights" and will speak at the round-table debate on the theme "Europe in a world of peace". Petre Roman will also have a series of important meetings, pursuing Romania's integration into NATO in the "Madrid wave"; thus, he will meet British prime minister Tony Blair, foreign secretary Robin Cook and possibly the new French prime minister Lionel Jospin. Asked whether the political changes in Paris and London will affect in any way Romania's chances to join NATO, Petre Roman has stated that Romania has a lot of friends supporting her among the social-democrats in these countries. Many politicians of Europe will be present in Malmo, as in 13 of the 15 EU member countries socialist or social-democrats are ruling. Also attending will be NATO secretary general Javier Solana, who is a Spanish social-democrat.

    [02] IMF Continue to Analyse tge Stage of the Reform Programme in Romania

    Bucharest - The IMF chief negociator Paul Thomsen and members of the executive continue to analyse in Bucharest the stage of the reform programme in Romania. After a first assessement, Paul Thomsen has indicated that the progrsmme is carried out in a fair manner, while the monetary and fiscal policies are "running smoothly". Such analyses are made every two mounth; the tranches of the 430 million dollar loan, given by the IMF in April to support the Romanian restructuring programme, depend on the results of these analyses. The other day, the World Bank approved a 550 million dollar loan for the same purpose. In Wednesday's session, the Romanian government made a new step in the enforcement of the reform, decidoing to improve the foreign investment regime. An emmergency ordinance provides for the regulation and liberalization of the capital market, the promotion and guarantee ofdirect foreign investments, as well as free competition. We also inform you that a Frame agreement of financial cooperation between the European Investment Bank and Romania was signed in Bucharest on Thursday, this being an important stage in backing Bucharest's efforts to join the EU. So far, Eomania received loans from the European Investment Bank worth 500 million ECU.

    [03] In Bucharest, the Fifth Edition of the International Book Fair

    Bucharest - The fiffth edition of the International Book Fair has got under way in Bucharest. More than 130 private publishers, 17 state publishing houses as well as book distributors, literary agents and printers of Romania, France, Germany, Holland, Grat Britain, Norway, the Republic of Moldova, Belgium are participating in this fair. More than 150 new titles will be launched.
