  • [01] Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin has returned from a NATO meeting in Sintra, Portugal

Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin has described as important the meeting of the NATO foreign ministers in Sintra, Portugal, owing to the fact that they expressed for the first time their points of view over the Alliance's enlargement. On Friday, upon his return to Bucharest from Sintra where he took part in the inauguration of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, Mr Severin said he had meetings with foreign ministers from Europe and North America, including the US secretary of state Madeleine Albright. He added that following hiJ talks with the foreign ministers from Budapest and Vienna, the Romania-Hungary-Austria trilateral, meant to strengthen security in Central Europe, was launched. The trilateral will occasion a closer political dialogue with sides cooperating for the preparation of Romania's and Hungary's admission into the European Union as well as in the fields of transport, infrastructure, human rights and ethnic minorities. [03] Spring session of NATO Parliamentary Assembly has ended in Luxemburg

The spring session of the North-Atlantic Parliamentary Assembly came to an end in Luxemburg on Sunday. The session was also attended by MPs from the partner countries, Romania included. The parliamentarians participating in the event have tried to reach a consensus on the number of nations that are going to be accepted into the Alliance in the first round. Luxemburg has reasserted its support for Romania's and Slovenia's admission in the Jirst intake although in Sintra, Porugal, the US advanced the idea of accepting only three countries in the first wave. In another move, Romania's former sovereign HM King Michael I was also in Luxemburg on Sunday as part of a tour meant for supporting Romania's joining NATO in the first round. RRI- RADOR, June 2

Romania's government has decided the setting up of a commission for the settling of a conflict generated by the ownership claim over a building in Central Romania at Odorheiul Secuiesc, a town mainly inhabited by ethnic Hungarians. The building in question is a school for orphan children, built by a Swiss foundation and the Romanian Greek-Catholic congregation. The building and the land on which it stands are claimed by the city hall of Odorheiul Secuiesc which wants to set up a higher education institu6e in Hungarian there. The local authorities have evacuated the nuns and the children from the school. Representatives of the Hungarian minority in Romania's government and ethnic Hungarians' Democratic Union of Romania have dissociated themselves from any brutal action, no matter who did it, and said that the mayor of the town is not a member of the ethnic Hungarians' Union.
