    Tiranė, Jan. 3 (ata) - The dollar has maintained the same values in its exchange rates with local money, Lek, in Tirana market on Monday morning as compared with the last day of 1999. One dollar was bought at 135 lek and sold at 135,5 lek.

    [02] First stage of the reconstruction of quay one, in port of Saranda completed

    SARANDA, Jan. 3 (ATA) - By Sh. Hajno: The reconstruction of the quay one of the port of Saranda was completed in the last few days.

    According to the director of this port, Vasil Duka, the reconstruction of the quay needed immediate intervention because it was greatly amortized and was a danger for the ships to anchor.

    The reconstruction of the quay started at the end of 1998 with a fund of 5 million lek, by the state budget. In the mean time, the complete reconstruction of the quay in the last quarter of 1999 needed another 5 million lek by the state budget.

    According to sources from the port, with the completion of the reconstruction of this quay, possibilities are created for the quick processing of the ships carrying commodities or passengers ferry boats and enables the only crane installed there to carry out 60 per cent of the volume of work in the port.

    During 1997, the port of Saranda was ruined and its quays exploded. The damage caused in that period according to official data, are as high as 12 million lek. /dast/xh/

    [03] CARE International to finance three new projects in Korce

    KORCE, Jan. 3 (ata) - By B Fejzullai: The Canadian humanitarian association CARE International will finance three new projects in the city of Korca.

    Ms Suzan Wutkin, coordinator of the association in Korce, said on Monday to ATA, that there are three priority projects to be financed during 2000 in the city of Korca.

    Ms Wutkin mentioned among them the rehabilitation of the A.Z.Cajupi theater building, the Arts Gallery, the rehabilitation of the illumination system and the Internet connection of the National Museum of Medieval Art, which will altogether have an investment of 250 thousand USD.

    During 1999, "Care International" financed 17 projects in the district of Korca, with a fund of about 500 thousand USD. /dast/xh/

    [04] Albanian emigrants return to Europe after New Year

    DURRES, Jan. 3 (ata) - By G Kabashi: Albanian emigrants who celebrated New Year with their families in Albania are returning to the countries where they have been living and working for several years.

    Sources of the navigation agency Taulantia told ATA on Monday that with the ferry boats of the company Adriatica, some 1 600 Albanians have travelled in the past three days towards the ports of Bari and Ancona.

    From Dec. 17 - 30, 1999, Adriatica company has brought to the port of Durres nearly 250 000 Albanians, most of whom will return to Italy in the first half of January.

    The same sources reported that most of the companies this month have established a supplementary ship for the sea lines linking the port of Durres with Italian ports of Bari, Brindisi, Ancona and Trieste. /dast/xh/

    [05] Construction of Kukes-Morine road axes to start soon

    KUKES, Jan. 3 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: During a recent visit to Kukes, close to the border with Kosova, Albanian Prime Minister Ilir Meta said that the government is resolute to shorten the road towards Prishtina.

    To this end, a tender will be held in January to determine the supervisor of the Kukes-Morine road as part of the Durres-Prishtine highway, sources from the prefecture of Kukes told ATA.

    According to these sources, Kukes-Morine axes will be build with a fund of 12 million USD delivered by the U.S. Government.

    In the mean time, work will also start for the rehabilitation of the Fushe Arres-Kukes road gravely damaged during the Kosova crisis, in 1999. For this segment, the World Bank has accorded a fund of more than 13 million USD.

    As has been reported some months ago, upon the initiative of the ex- premier Pandeli Majko, an idea was launched to link with a highway the coastal city of Durres, Albania, with the capital of Kosova, Prishtina. /xh/

    [06] Work for construction of Kapshtice-Korce highway to be intensified

    KORCE, Jan.3 (ata) - By B Fejzullai: During 2000 work for the construction of section 3 of the Kapshtice-Korce highway, part of East-West project of Corridor 8, will be intensified.

    The chief of the town-planning section of the district of Korce, Rolanda Raco, told ATA on Monday that the European Union is financing for the construction of the highway through the PHARE program with a total of 19,158 million EURO.

    So far, the work has advanced with the construction of 4.5 km of the track.

    The highway 33.2 km long will be 11,5 meters wide and will have four lines. The Macedonian firm, Granit, is working for its construction.

    According to the project, the work is envisaged to be over within 24 months from the beginning of the work. Corridor 8 starts in Albania and passes through Macedonia, Bulgaria and ends in Turkey. /xh/

    [07] Weather forecast for Monday in Albania

    TIRANE, Jan. 3 (ata) - During Monday, Jan.3, 2000, Albania will continue to be under the influence of a zone with high atmospheric pressure gradually weakening and accompanied by a mass of cold air.

    The weather is envisaged to be cloudy. The wind will blow slightly and a bit stronger mostly northwards.

    The lowest and highest temperatures are forecast to be -9 and 3 grade Celsius in mountain areas, -3 and 8 grades in lowland areas and -1 and 10 grade Celsius in coastal zones. /xh/
