  • [01] Besnik Mustafaj, candidate for Prize Medicis in France

TIRANE, Sept.26 (ata) - By K Shehu: The novel "Boshi" (Vanity) by the renowned Albanian writer Besnik Mustafaj, is one of the candidates for the prize Medicis, the most important annual prize in France for foreign and French literature, the Publishing House Onufri told ATA on Saturday.

The novel published a year ago in Albanian by this publishing house and in French by the publishing house Albin Mishel in Paris, has been selected from ten contesting books for the prize, which is expected to be granted on November 5, 1999.

The novel "Boshi" reflects Albania before 90s, during which, according to the author, "the relations between people were rather cold and limited."

The term "dictatorship", although found in none of the pages of the novel, is felt in the atmosphere the author created with his book and in the vanity of the relations between the characters in the novel. /led/xh/

[03] Mined zones continue to be a danger in north Albania

HAS, Sept. 26 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: The mined zones on northeast border of Albania continue to cause victims among the people there. He was taken to the hospital of the town of Kruma immediately, sources of which report that the policeman is out of danger for his life, although he has grave wounds.

In the recent months, the mines planted by the Serb army during the conflict in Kosove, have caused victims on the northeast border of the country. Only during the period following June 13, there have been over 12 people killed from mines and at least 46 people injured in the districts of the prefecture of Kukes (Kukes, Tropoje, Has.) /led/xh/

[04] Albanian republicans oppose Berisha's statements on ownerships

TIRANE, Sept. 26 (ata) - By A Haxhiu: The Republican Party of Albania qualified as hypocritical the statements by the Democratic Party chairman Sali Berisha on Saturday.

In a statement issued last Saturday evening, the Republican Party says that "for more than two years Berisha has been demanding coalition with RP and we have responded to their invitations, which we have considered as positive for the nation and the opposition, while precisely now he appears to be against cooperation."

"It is high time when we must work for the opposition and not for set individuals, whatever they are," writes the RP declaration among others.

The DP chairman opposed on Saturday the cooperation in the future with RP regarding the question of ownerships, because, as he put it, "we will make no compromise with those who signed the constitution which is destructive for ownerships." /led/xh/

[06] Democrat leader says past mistakes of DP not to be repeated

TIRANE, Sept.25 (ata) - By A Haxhiu: The leader of the Democratic Party (DP) Sali Berisha said on Saturday in a conference of the DP branch for Tirane, that the past mistakes should not repeated and demanded the creation of a new alternative which, as he said, will bring the country out of the crisis in case DP returns to power.

According to Berisha, the main points of the program which DP will be based upon are the consolidation of the Albanian state and institutions, by selecting the employees on the basis of professionalism, by restoring law and order, realising the economic recovery, the confiscation of illegal ownerships and by adopting the proper stand towards ownerships. Restitution of ownerships to legal owners was for Berisha the main point of the party program. He accepted that mistakes have also been made during the time DP was in power.

While the DP deputy chairman Genc Pollo, after making a panorama of the local political situation, said that at these moments "we must come out with new alternatives, because the present government showed it is incapable to run the country."

The participants in the conference, which closed the round of conferences of DP branches in the districts, voted for the new chairman of the DP branch for Tirane, who was Vili Minarolli, presently DP Secretary for Public Relations. /led/xh/

[07] Floating crane in Durres risks to sink

DURRES, Sept. 26 (ata) - By S Gjordeni: The floating crane "Adem Reka" in the sea port of Durres, the biggest port in the country, risks to be covered by water. For 9 years, the floating crane with a capacity of 900 tons, has not had any repairing, contrary to all technical norms, sources from the port of Durres told ATA on Sunday.

In order to rescue the floating crane which has cost millions of dollars, from sinking, a lot of funds are needed. According to the navigation register in Durres, the activity of the present floating crane is considered totally impossible and dangerous.

The floating crane was produced in 1954 in Hungary and bought by the Albanian Government in 1958. It is the only navigation means which has served to unload all the machineries of the hydro-power stations, heavy constructions for factories and plants, etc., therefore, the repairing of the floating crane as quick as possible is an urgent need. /led/xh/
