[08] Berisha says DP stand towards Parliament should be reconsidered

TIRANE, June 25 (ATA)-By A. Haxhiu, The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, on Monday said in his opening address at the National Council meeting of this party that the developments at home necessitate reconsideration of the DP stand towards Parliament. The DP National Council (the highest body of this party) convened this morning to discuss meeting of the DP Emergency Assembly to review the earlier decision of DP Council for a final withdrawal from Parliament.

Berisha said that also influencing in the current decision is the support by the U.S. authorities to help with a team of experts in throwing light on the murder of democrat legislator Azem Hajdari.

Berisha also mentioned the solution of the Kosova issue and said that this "makes us work to set up democratic institutions in Kosova and Albania".

Berisha considered right the decision taken one year ago to finally boycott Parliament, as, according to him, the coalition government had begun to openly attack the opposition.

He praised the performance of the Albanian government, especially of Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, in hosting the Albanians forcibly displaced from Kosova, and the government's support for the NATO nations in the fight against the Milosevic regime.

The DP decided to finally withdraw from Parliament in August 1988, a boycott which was not well received by the international community, its institutions as well as the parties of all spectrum in Europe and the U.S..

Western senior authorities and renowned politicians have constantly denounced this boycott asking from the DP to return to Parliament. /pas/lm/
