  • [01] Saranda, a pole in Southern Albania, to attract foreign investors

    SARANDE, June 20 (ata) - By Shkelqim Hajno: Saranda may serve as a pole of the Southern Albania region to attract foreign investments, said the Ambassador of Greece in Tirane, Aleksandro Mallias, in a working meeting with local government leaders of Sarande on Sunday.

    Mallias spoke of the order and increase of security for foreign inhabitants and nationals coming to invest in southern Albania. He mentioned the programs of Greece for southern Albania and said that Saranda and the entire coastal zone, will attract in the future many tourists from the Greek island of Corfu.

    Ambassador Mallias assured those present that Greece will support unsparingly the Public Order Ministry of Albania, a pledge he made the previous day in Gjirokaster to minister Spartak Poci.

    The chairman of the district council, Th. Papagjika asked from the Greek Ambassador assistance for the district infrastructure and expressed the need of opening in Sarande an affiliate of the Greek Bank. /pas/xh/

    [02] A great number of Kosovars continue to leave Shkoder

    SHKODER, June 21 (ata) - By M Malja: The wave of the Kosovars who are returning to their homes in Kosove has started in the eight reception centres and in the three refugees camps set up in the district of Shkoder.

    The spokesman of the prefecture told ATA that over the past few days, over 3 500 Kosovars have left Shkoder with their private vehicles or through vans and by buses of Shkoder-Kukes service bus line.

    In this regard, a meeting was held in the prefecture of Shkoder with representatives of the local government and UNHCR asking the Kosovars not to leave in an unorganized way because soon the UNHCR will organize their return with NATO means and those of the Albanian army.

    During the travel to Kukes, the refugees will be accompanied by medical teams and police forces. /led/xh/

    [03] Number of Kosovars sheltered in Kukes keeps reducing

    KUKES, June 21 (ata) - By R Hoxha: From 4-10 a.m. on Monday about 4 500 Kosovars crossed the border point of Morini, and most of them had come from other districts of Albania, sources from the police commissariat of Kukes district report.

    The influx of the Kosova people leaving towards Kosova during Sunday has increased with 15 800 people crossing the border post of Morini and 1 700 others going to Kosova through the customs point of Qafe Prush in Has district. During the past two days, 92 640 people have left for Kosova.

    Three of eight camps set up in Kukes district for Kosova deportees continue to function with 5 680 Kosovars still sheltered in them. /led/xh/

    [05] Mines, a great problem for border residents in northern Albania

    KUKES, June 21,(ATA) - R.Hoxha - Incidents along the border line were took place also on Sunday, when residents of nearby border villages have stepped on mines planted by the Serb army.

    According to border police sources of Kukës district, on Sunday, at about 4 p.m. Albanian national named Gentjan Ramadani was gravely wounded and lost his leg.

    During the recent days, in the North-Eastern part of Albania, along a border line of about 125 km mined by Serbs, as a result of uncontrolled crossing of the border by Albanians and Kosovars, the number of the victims has amounted to five, and that of the injured to twenty. /led/Na/xh/

    [06] Kosovars hold ceremony to thank Saranda local people for their hosting

    SARANDE, June 21 (ata) - By Shkelqim Hajno: The Kosovars accommodated in Sarande held last Sunday in the building of the former tourist hotel a ceremony of thanks for local people in that city who welcomed them fraternally and hosted them for the past three months.

    The representative of the Kosovars in Sarande, Teki Shala, during the ceremony which was attended by local government officials, representatives of the emergency staffs for Kosovars, and others, thanked the people of Saranda and the local government there.

    During the ceremony, a group of Kosova deportees performed an artistic concert.

    About 2 700 Kosovars have been sheltered in various reception centres and some of them in families in Saranda district and its communes. /pas/xh/

    [07] Task Force Hawk expecting orders from NATO Command

    TIRANE, June 21 (ata) - By Besnik Meta: Troops of the military contingent of the U.S. army, called the Task Hawk Force and deployed in the military airport of Rinas, are waiting for orders from the NATO Supreme Command.

    The spokesman of "Task Force Hawk-Public Affairs", Captain Worges, stressed that the future of this U.S. contingent in Albania is not exactly known but the idea is that the remaining troops in the Hawk Base of Rinas will help the Kosovars that will return to their homes.

    The contingent of U.S. marines in Task Force Hawk has now reduced its number, a good part of them has been transferred to Macedonia and later to Kosova, where they will carry out a peace-keeping mission. /led/xh/

    [08] Some Albanian prefects visit Prizren

    DURRES, June 21 (ata) - By S Gjordeni: The prefects of Tirane, Durres and Elbasan, Makbule Ceco, Martin Cukalla, Durim Hushi and the director of the department of Prefectures, Vladimir Shehu, visited last weekend the city of Prizren where they met with the prefect Ekrem Rexha. This is the first visit of the representatives of the Albanian local government to liberated Kosova.

    The prefect of Prizren, Ekrem Rexha expressed his thanks to the Albanian people for the brilliant hospitality manifested for the deported Kosova people who found in Albania a full support like brothers of the same blood.

    According to Prefect Cukalla, work has started to restore normality in the life and the institutions of the local government, which did not exist before.

    Regarding the historical building of the Prizren League which was ruined by Serb forces, Prefect Rexha said to his counterparts from Albania, that "measures are being adopted that the building, which symbolizes the Albanian resistance for freedom in centuries, be reconstructed soon."

    The visit, said Cukalla, opened the way to the cooperation between the local government in Albania and the new local structures being set up in Kosova. /led/xh/

    [09] French troops start construction of airport of Korce

    KORCE, June 21 (ata) - By B Fejzullai: French troops of NATO started last Sunday the construction of the airport of Korce.

    Frederik Mico, chairman of the district council, told ATA that the French troops, part of the NATO contingent "The Allied Harbour" have started and will complete the work for the construction of the airport of Korce, near village Mulalas, 4 km from the city.

    According to the French contingent commander, Colonel Gross, on July 15 the leveling of the runway will be completed along with the construction of the infrastructure and the runway for helicopters.

    During the second stage, said Gross, the asphalting of the area and the surrounding wall of the airfield will be completed. For this work, a special fund will be provided by the municipality of Korca, while the equipment for the airport, such as illumination, communication etc., will be covered by the French Government.

    At the beginning of May, the airfield Meteor, set up by the Arab United Emirates, was inaugurated in Kukes. /pas/xh/

    [10] Guardia di Finanzia celebrates its 225 anniversary

    DURRES, June 21 (ATA) - By Gezim Kabashi: The Italian soldiers of Guardia di Finanzia celebrated on Monday the 225 anniversary of its creation.

    In the ceremony organized on this occasion, where took part leaders of the local government, the Commander of Guardia di Fianzia contingent, vice-colonel Giovani Arpante read the greeting addressed by the Commander General, General Rolando Mosca Moschino. He thanked the participants for the cooperation with Albanian homologue structures.

    This is the second year that soldiers of "Fiamme Gialle" (as they call themselves) are celebrating the anniversary of Guardia di Finanzia. Guardia di Finazia came to Albania due to an agreement signed between the two governments and this contingent is working in the framework of Interforce mission. /dast/A.A/

    [11] Blair hails Albanian stance on Kosove situation

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA) - British Premier, Toni Blair addressed a letter to Albanian president, Rexhep Meidani, where he hailed the talks held between them in Tirane, the Press and Information Office close to the Presidency told ATA on Monday.

    "The close estimation of Kosove refugees' condition and your thought on the democratic developments in the region and the situation in Serbia were very important for me" writes the British Premier, referring to the latest meeting he had with the Albanian President during the visit he payed to Albania on mid-May. /dast/A.A/

    [12] Meidani meets Public Order, Defence, NIS senior officials

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA)-President of the Republic Rexhep Meidani on Monday called at a meeting Minister of Public Order Spartak Poci, deputy Minister of Defence Ilir Bocka, chief of the General Staff Aleks Andoni and head of the National Information Service (SHIK) Fatos Klosi, regarding the latest developments at home and in Kosova, as well as the situation of security and stability at home.

    [13] Parliament; Plenary session to be held on forthcoming Monday -Agenda of Parliament proceedings approved-

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA) - By A.Gjakova: The regular meeting of the Parliamentary Bureau was held on Monday. It decided the agenda of the proceedings of the People's Assembly for the current week, where the main points are the approval of the members of central government, the members of the National Council of Radio-Television, as well as some other draft- laws.

    The Parliament is expected to be gathered in parliamentary commissions on Tuesday and on Wednesday, while the plenary session will be held on the forthcoming Monday. /dast/A.A/

    [14] Memaliaj - Negotiations with striking miners

    Tirana, June 21 (ATA) - By Manjola Pupa - A interministerial team, consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Public Economy and Privatization, Local Government and Ministry of Finances went in Memaliaj on Monday to talk with striking miners about the petition drafted by them.

    According to the spokesman of the Ministry of Public Economy and Privatization Vladimir Avrami, today has started the analyzation on administrating of some 200 million lek, given for this mine. The results of this control will be announced after three days. This source informs that the administration staff of this mine is fired from the work as a result of "poor management".

    Memaliaj mine since 1997 marked only loses and due to this fact the further subvention by the state is impossible.

    23 miners of this mine started their strike since six days. They are against the decision of the Government dated June 9, which orders the closure of the mine and the financial treatment of its 450 miners for two years. They insisted on the visit of Prime Minister Pandeli Majko in this mine. /pas/linda/

    [15] Albanian and French Health Ministers sign cooperation agreement

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA)-By R. Xhuvani, Albanian and French Health Ministers, respectively Leonard Solis and Bernard Kuchner, in Tirane on Sunday signed an agreement, on whose basis France is ready to financially contribute to the Albanian health care.

    According to the agreement, the French state will invest 30 million francs for the construction of a new hospital in the compund of the University Hospital Centre "Mother Teresa" in Tirane.

    The agreement also includes an aid of 1,6 million francs for the Public Health Institute in Tirane as technical assistance.

    The agreement provides training for the young Albanian doctors at French Hospitals, medical exchanges and financial support for several emergency centers in various districts of Albania. /dast/lm/

    [16] 50 million dollars by NATO on rehabilitation of key points in Albania

    Tirana, June 21 (ATA) - By M.Pupa - The agreement on rehabilitating some of the main works of transport infrastructure in Albania is assigned, today, midday, between the Ministry of Public Affairs and Transport and NATO.

    The agreement is assigned by the Minister Ingrid Shuli and NATO representative, Commander of AFOR forces John Ried.

    This agreement, consisting of 6 points, will be implemented through a fund of 50 million dollars. It includs the rehabilitation of Durresi-Kukes street, the secondary roads of Rinas airport, the use of a piece of land near Durresi Port and Rinas airport. /dast/linda/

    [17] Albanian President meets representatives of Albanian Catholic Church in New York

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA) - Albanian President, Rexhep Meidani, met on Monday a delegation of the Albanian Catholic Church, with its headquarter in New York.

    The delegation was leaded by Don Pjeter Popaj, while participating in the meeting was even the chairman of Albanian Archbishopric Conference, Rrok Mirdita.

    According to the press and information office close to the presidency, during the meeting, Don Pjeter Popaj, and his cooperators expressed to the Albanian President their special pleasure for the excellent image Albanian and Albanian people have won in USA after the tragical events in Kosove.

    During the meeting of Meidani with representatives of Albanian Catholic Chorch "Zoja e Shkodres", with its center in New York, the main issue discussed were the steps undertaken for setting up of a Catholic University in Albania. /dast/A.A/

    [18] Solana to visit Albania and Kosova soon

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA)-By E. Nepravishta, NATO Secretary General Javier Solana will visit Kosova and Albania soon.

    Solana declared this at a meeting in Budapest on Monday with Albanian Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, who is attending the proceedings of NATO's 16th seminar.

    Majko said that Albania with its stand throughout the crisis carried out its duty, but now it merits to be called partner of the North Atlantic Association, according to the spokesman of the Prime Minister.

    Majko, dwelling on the importance of rebuilding Kosova and its democratic institutions, stressed the indispensability of including a long- term NATO presence in the Pact of Stability.

    NATO Secretary General Solana evaluated the role of the Albanian government and people in coping with the crisis in the region and said he was optimistic of the success of the operation of the Kosova refugees' return to their homes. /dast/lm/

    [19] Albanian Bank defines limits on foreign currency circulation in custom offices

    Tirana, June 21 (ata) - By E.Metaj The Supervising Council of the Albanian Bank, through an instruction, defined the limits of physical movement of the foreign currency at the custom offices.

    The values in cash and traveler cheque, entering in Albania more than 10 thousand dollars should be declared, it is said in an instruction issued by the Albanian Bank " About the sums in currency that can come in and out the territory of Republic of Albania".

    According to this instruction of the Albanian Bank, assigned by the Governor Shkelqim Cani, the natives are allowed to take with them the sum marking the value to 10 thousand dollars or its equivalent with any other currency.

    Merchants, both Albanian physical and juridical persons, are not allowed to take out of Albania sums more than 25 000 dollars or its equivalent in any other foreign currency. After the declaration of the sum, the merchants should present to the custom authorities the registration certification at the tax office.

    Individuals and merchants, native and foreign, physical and juridical persons are not allowed to take out the territory of Albania sums more than 100 000 lek per person, it is defined in the instruction. /dast/linda/

    [20] Criteria of Turkish assistance for Guard of Republic are defined

    Tirana, June 21 (ATA) - An agreement is assigned on Monday between the Albanian Ministry of Public Order and the General Military Headquarter of the Republic of Turkey.

    The agreement assigned at the Ministry of Public Order, defines the criteria of implementing the Turkish assistance, which is going to be used on projects with the Guard of Republic, aiming at increasing its acting power.

    The ceremony of handing a considerable contingent of materials, donated by the Turkish Government, is organized on Monday at the building of the Guard of Republic.

    [21] Aid Protocol signed

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA) - By Enkelejda Koraqi: An Aid Protocol was signed on Monday between the Albanian and Turkish armies, the spokesman of Albanian Defence Ministry, told ATA today.

    The aid was allocated by the Turkish army, and the two main directions of this agreement were the aid to be allocated for machineries, and the equipments for the naval base of Pasha-Limanit and the school of Naval Marine, which has a value of $ 2 million and the aid to be given for the reconstruction of the Mechanical Plant of Poliçan, with a value of 1 million Dollars.

    For the Turkish part the Protocol was signed by the General Director of Logistic, General Dursan Bak, leader of the Turkish delegation, while for the Albanian part it was signed by the Logistic Director, Brigade General, Kostaq Karoli, leader of the Albanian military team. /lh/A.A/

    [22] Gjinushi leaves for formal visit to Ankara

    TIRANE, June 21 (ATA)-A delegation of Albanian Parliament, headed by Speaker Skender Gjinushi, left for Ankara, Turkey, on Saturday, to take part in the proceedings of the Parliamentary Assembly of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC), the parliament's press office reports.

    The PABSEC Assembly starts proceedings tomorrow until June 24, 1999. This organisation was created by the governments of the region watered by the Black Sea. It was created on the initiative of Turkey in 1995 and it comprises nine states. /lh/lm/
