  • [01] MINISTRY OF HEALTH APPEALS TO CONTINUE VACCINATION OF CHILDREN

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA) - By A. Keko: The Ministry of Health and Environment reports that in several districts of Albania the health service is paralysed and the vaccination of children is interrupted.

    "This can be of grave consequences for the health of population. If this situation continue, we could face epidemic diseases", stresses the Ministry in an appeal issued today.

    According to the sources of this Ministry, the dimensions of destructions have gravely affected even the health institutions.

    The Ministry of Health and Environment calls on all population, health employees, staffs of salvation in districts and order forces to defend these institutions. /a.ke/jz/mt/k

    [02] SITUATION IN DURRES TOWARDS STABILITY

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA) - By S. Gjordeni: Sources of the Durres police commissariat told ATA that the control of pol ice and volunteer forces is reinforced. They have patrolled in the streets of the city.

    While on Tuesday it is expected to increase the number of armoured vehicles to reinforce even more the control in roadblocks and streets of the town. /s.sh/kei/mt/k

    [03] "BERISHA'S RESIGNATION WILL NOT BE GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY" - declares Albanian Foreign Minister -

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA) - If President Berisha would give up before the requests to resign, "this will not be good for the country," said Albanian Foreign Minister Arian Starova, in the news conference with his Italian counterpart Lamberto Dini, during the visit he payed Wednesday in Italy.

    According to the chief of the Albanian diplomacy, the removal of Berisha would create a "vacuum" which would cause problems to the country.

    "We should find an interlocutor to contact with the countries which would like to help Albania," he said. /kei/mt/k

    [04] DEFENCE MINISTER MEETS TURKISH MILITARY ATTACHE IN TIRANA

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA) - Albanian Defence Minister Shaqir Vukaj held Wednesday a special meeting with the military attache of Turkey in Tirana, colonel Ali Demizli, spokesman of Defence Ministry reports.

    Vukaj presented to Demizli the requests for urgent aid in the field of logistics to make possible the functioning and the activity of military units to defend the country.

    Colonel Demizli stressed the readiness of Turkey to help Albania. /s.sh/kei/mt/Z/

    [05] 400 ALBANIAN CITIZENS RESCUE FROM DROWNING IN SHIP

    LEZHE, MARCH 19 (ATA) - By Zef Pergega: The military authorities of Bari, Italy, saved the life of some 400 Albanian citizens, who while sailing to Italy remained in the open sea, because their ship "Rozafa" ran into distress in wavy sea.

    It was a signal of Rita Bisha, employee at "Poseidon" company in Shengjin, who informed the director of this company in Italy, Alfredow Scermino, on this.

    Scermino immediately informed the military authorities of Bari, who sent two helicopters and three navy ships to help the ship "Rozafa" which was wrecking.

    According to Scermino, at about 16.00, all the people were embarked in the Italian navy ships, rescuing the tragedy. /a.ke/kei/mt/k

    [06] SITUATION IN ELBASAN RETURNING TO NORMAL

    ELBASAN, MARCH 20 (ATA)- By P. Zekthi, The situation in the Elbasan town is returning back to normal. The local government, banks and various institutions have been normally operating.

    The district political parties met today and decided to give maximum support to the National Reconciliation Government, especially the public order bodies to maintain public peace.

    Salvation committees have been set up in the town to cooperate with the local government bodies to normalise the situation. s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [07] POST SERVICE IN ALBANIA IS REORGANISING

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA)-By E.Allushi, The post service in the districts of Albania, with all the damages suffered, is now being reorganised, according to the general post department.

    This service has almost been lacking also due to the closure of the Rinas airport. The service resumed today in the districts of Elbasan, Shkoder and Berat. While in the southern districts of Sarande and Gjirokaster the border post service has been so far suspended but efforts are being made to resume it as soon as possible.

    "In general the premises of this service have been guarded except in Burrel and Tropoje, where the posts have come out of use due to the great damages," the posts director general, Fadil Smaili, said. kled/lm/sh/

    [08] SITUATION IN LIBRAZHD IS RETURNING TO NORMALITY

    LIBRAZHD, MARCH 20 (ATA)- By P. Zekthi, The situation in the Librazhd town, Southeastern Albania, is getting back to normal.

    Sources of the local government, which has now resumed work in cooperation with the salvation committee, report that measures are taken in connection with the public order, maintenance of peace and bread supply.

    The uncontrolled price rises of the necessary food items greately worry the inhabitants.s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [09] ALBANIAN RINAS AIRPORT REOPENS

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA)-By order of the Defence, Interior and Transports ministers, the only Albanian civil airport of Rinas, some 30 kms from Tirana, reopened today, after eight days of flight suspension.

    All airline associations connected with the airport are resuming flights since tomorrow.

    The "Albanian Airlines" will carry out tomorrow the first flight from Tirana to Sofia.

    By the beginning of 1997, the Rinas airport operated in full capacity with 12 flights a day.kled/lm/sh/

    [10] ALBANIAN PREMIER MEETS KORCE LOCAL GOVERNMENT LEADERS

    TIRANA, MARCH 20 (ATA)- Albanian Prime Minister Bashkim Fino met today in Tirana with leaders of the Korce district local government, the prefect, the chairman of the district council, the mayor and the chairman of the salvation committee, according to the Premier's press and information office.

    Expressing Korca's full support for the National Reconciliation Government, they informed Fino of the very grave situation in this district recently. They also familiarised him of the performance of the local government and its cooperation with the city's salvation committee.

    They asked the government to take measures in connection with with electricity, water and bread supply. The restoration of public order and peace is urgent at these moments.

    Fino stressed that the government is determined to realise the programme the parliament approved for this government of political consensus, which will cooperate with the legitimate bodies and is ready to dialogue with all the political forces and the city committees to resolve the problems emerging during the period of the state of emergency.

    The restoration of the public order and peace and the normalisation of all activities in the Korce city should be an immediate objective of all the parties.

    Interior Minister Celo and Defence Minister Vukaj stressed the support of the forces of their ministries to restore the lost peace in this district. a.ke/kled/lm/sh/
