TIRANA, JAN 20 (ATA)- By E. Allushi, The Austrian Federal Ministry of Sciences offers for the academic year 1997-1998 about 30 postgraduate study scholarships, according to sources of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

"Besides the diploma the candidates should also have carried out a scientific research activity," the specialists of the Foreign Relations Department at this ministry say.

Their selection will be made by a joint Albanian-Austrian joint commission.

Scholarships for students and young scientists to attend summer courses will as well be applied. Other scholarships to be accorded, in the context of this aid, are those for German language and Austrian literature teachers. kled/lm/sh/

    [03]

TIRANA, JAN 19 (ATA)- The Albanian-Macedonian joint company "VEFA- Pelagonija" for projects and constructions has been created, Sunday's Albania reports.

The Macedonians will send a group of architects and designers to realise the projects, worth some 400 000 dollars and which will cover a period of five years.

The spokesman of the VEFA company has confirmed to the newspaper Albania that the Macedonian company will start work after several weeks to materialise the investment worth one million dollars accorded to the Tirana Municipality.

[04] TRADER DETAINED FOR ILLEGAL ACTIVITY IN KAKAVIJA

KAKAVIJA, JAN 19 (ATA) By H.Cani,

A trader from Saranda has been detained on charges of exercising illegal activity.

The chief of the Gjirokaster Police Commissariat, Ilirjan Kokalari, has told ATA that the border police at the Kakavija border point checked the trailer with household electric appliance of trader Artur Disha and found out that only 30 per cent of the commodity was claimed."

Sources of the commissariat say that the driver of the vehicle, Kristaq Zisi, has been left free as he was not involved in this illegal trade.

The confiscated goods include electric stoves, lamps, refrigerators and other appliance.

Four customs' officials have been detained since last December because they have allowed illegal crossing through this border point in cooperation with other people.

In order to put an end to smuggling, the Gjirokaster police commissariat has tightened control at this border crossing point. s.sh/lm/sh/

    [05] INFLUX OF BANK DEPOSITS

TIRANA, JAN 19 (ATA)- Deposits in the Savings Bank in Saranda, southern Albania, and in that of Elbasan, Middle Albania, have increased, sources inside these banks report.

During January the citizens' deposits in Saranda have increased by 30 per cent, as opposed to the same period last year. This phenomenon, according to the sources, is linked with the citizens' uncertainty to deposit their savings in loan-taking companies.

Some 15 bank books were opened on Saturday beforenoon by depositors who address themselves to the state bank for the first time.

Dozens of emigrants have returned of late to Saranda depositing their money in its banks because only there their money is safe.

In Elbasan, after the failure of the loan-taking company "Sude", which applied the pyramid scheme, the investors were depositing their money in banks.

More than 500 clients deposited their money in three points of the Savings Bank in this city within a day.

The Albanian Savings banks offer much higher interests in comparison with many banks in other European states.

The number of depositors is expected to increase in the next few days, according to bank sources.

This is also the opinion of many people waiting to receive the amounts deposited in the "Populli" and "Xhaferi" foundations, following the latest decision of the government to seize their funds in banks.

The recent shaking of the pyramid companies and the charitable foundations has made dozens of clients to deposit their money in the state bank. The annual interest rates in banks are 19 per cent.

However, the desire to gain as much money as possible through the loan- taking companies has not yet vanished, as it is the case with some citizen still investing money in the "Xhaferri" foundation. kled/lm/sh/

Monsegneur Massafra was accompanied to the throne of the bishopric seat of the Rresheni diocese by the ambassador of the Vatican in Tirana, Monsegneur Ivan Dias.

In the pontifical mass celebrated on this occasion, Monsegneur Massafra said that his primary commitment, together with the Caritas and local government, would be reconciliation and peace. The message addressed to the participants in the mass was:"Offer pardon, get peace".
