The premier further stressed that Turkey’s future was very bright. /Turkiye/[05] FRANCE: “WE WILL NOT CREATE A CRISIS IN THE EU”France, which has been recently threatening via various ranking French officials who say: “Turkey should recognize Greek Cyprus,” otherwise the negotiations with the European Union may not begin on Oct. 3, alleviated its stance yesterday. French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, said: “France did not want to create a new crisis in Europe.” At the annual meeting of the French ambassadors to foreign countries, Douste-Blazy stated that if a country that would like to join the EU (Turkey), rejected recognizing an EU country (Greek Cyprus), it would not be an appropriate condition. Douste-Blazy said that, therefore, an EU country France had the right to demand Turkey to clarify its attitude on the Cyprus issue, and added: “This is a legitimate demand. France is not looking for creating a new crisis in Europe.” /Milliyet/[06] ERDOGAN: “WE ARE COMMITTED TO NEW IRAQI IDEAL”Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey is committed to the new Iraqi ideal in an article published in Wall Street Journal, one of the most prestigious dailies in the US. Erdogan also announced that, in Iraq where everything had changed dramatically, all the segments of the society had been struggling to establish security, stability, but this could be achieved if ethnical and religious diversity was taken into consideration as a source of wealth, not competition. Barroso stated that the EU Commission was preparing for Turkey’s EU talks, adding that it was the responsibility of the EU member states to decide when Turkey’s talks would begin. /Turkiye/[08] EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: “THE EU WILL BEGIN ANKARA’S EU TALKS ON OCT. 3”European Parliament President Josep Borrell said yesterday that the European Union would begin Ankara’s EU talks on Oct. 3, adding that this was the promise of the Union. “The EU will keep its promise,” said Borrell, adding that Christian Democrats leader Angela Merkel’s opposition to Turkey’s EU membership was about the elections in Germany. Borrell added that the Europeans weren’t rational in evaluating Turkey’s EU membership bid. /Turkiye/[09] INVESTMENTS OF ENGLISH CLOTHING COMPANIES FLOW FROM CHINA TO TURKEYThe Financial Times wrote that the investments of the English clothing companies began to flow from China to Turkey, India, and East Europe as these companies want to reply to the rapid changes in fashion with the same momentum. The billionaire retailer Philip Green announced that they have abandoned China since December and that began to work with Turkey and Eastern European countries which are closer to the market. Green said that in China the quality was very high and the costs are very low, but China could not quickly meet the demands of the market. /Milliyet/[10] TURKEY IS THE SAFEST COUNTRY IN EUROPEThe officials of the Centraal Beheer, one of the leading insurance companies based in the Netherlands, said in their statement published in Telegraaf that Turkey was the best country in Europe in terms of security. France, mostly preferred by Dutch tourists for vacation, is the most insecure country. Dutch tourists are faced with robberies mostly in France, Spain and Italy. /Milliyet/[11] FROM THE COLUMNS... FROM THE COLUMNS... FROM THE COLUMNS...[12] TERRORISM AND MORAL VALUES BY TURKER ALKAN (RADIKAL)Columnist Turker Alkan comments on the terrorism and possible reasons and solutions to this problem. A summary of his column is as follows:“Terrorist attacks are increasing in the entire world and it’s likely to increase more in the future. Everybody’s suggesting a solution. Some people say that the only solution is more democracy and others don’t agree with this. Some people say that the problem essentially derives from inequality and exploitation and others say that if we know the identity of terrorists, this problem would be solved. Another suggestion has come from Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc recently. He said, ‘We can solve this problem only by channeling towards moral values.’ Of course, Arinc is not an ordinary person, but a parliament speaker. He must know something to say this. However, considering the terrorist attacks of recent years, actually I don’t observe such a problem as the lack of belief or moral values. On the contrary, it seems to me that the people causing terrorism have some ‘extra moral values.’ Recently, a terrorist said, ‘We’re killing people for God’s sake.’ Can you say that the people who believe in God and call his name before committing suicide with bomb and killing hundreds of people lack moral values? I can’t say this. Of course, not all the people who believe in God are terrorists. Nobody can say such a thing. However, most of the terrorists are extremely committed to their religion, give importance to moral values too much and ready to end their lives for this. We have seen the bloody examples of this both in Turkey and abroad. All these attacks were carried out by the people who express their devotion for moral values, weren’t they? How many of these terrorists said that they weren’t committed to moral values? None of them… Some people who think like Mr. Arinc has an answer to this. They say, ‘These terrorists believe in wrong moral values. Our moral values are right. If they believe in ours, there would be no problem.’ Actually, some of the problems derive from the discussion that my moral values are superior to yours! Maybe, the main reason of terrorism is fanaticism. Of course, there is no need to be religious to be a fanatic. You can be a fanatic nationalist or a fanatic leftist. The remedy to this illness isn’t following such conventional views as moral values which might create more fanaticism. On the contrary, the people can get rid of fanaticism as long as they start to ask questions, analyze conventional views and develop their views freely. This way their mentalities would be free and it gets unlikely for them to use violence.” ARCHIVE <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript" src="http:/_www.byegm.gov.tr_statistic/countcode.js"> </script> Turkish Press Review Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
