  • [01] BAYKAL CRITICIZES GOVT POLICY IN FIGHTING TERRORIST GROUP PKK

    In a written statement released yesterday, Opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal harshly criticized the government’s policy in fighting the terrorist group PKK, claiming that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was directly negotiating with the PKK. Baykal stated that the terrorists should be isolated from the politics, adding that all sections directly or indirectly supporting terror should be displayed to the public and should be isolated. Touching on a recent wave of terrorist attacks, Baykal said that terror was trying to be revitalized, adding that the PKK was laying down conditions to the state and the government was weak concerning the issue. /Cumhuriyet/

    [02] INTERIOR MINISTER: “EACH ACTION ENCOURAGING TERROR WILL HURT TURKEY’S UNITY, DEVELOPMENT AND BRIGHT FUTURE”

    Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu said yesterday that each action which would encourage terror would hurt Turkey’s unity, development and bright future. Making an opening speech at a meeting of governors, Aksu said that necessary measures should be taken in order to improve relations between the citizens and the state. “In our fight against terrorism, we should support military success with social and economic measures,” said Aksu, adding that this fact was known by everyone in the country. /Turkiye/

    [03] REHN: “EU COMMISSION MAY BE CHARGED WITH TURKEY’S ACCESSION TALKS”

    European Union Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn said yesterday that he was sure that next month the European Union member states would agree to begin Ankara’s EU accession talks. Speaking to Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat yesterday, Rehn predicted that the European Union Commission would be charged with Turkey’s accession talks, adding that the start of Ankara’s talks would further support the reforms in the country. Rehn stated that after Turkey signed the additional Customs Union protocol, there was no other obstacle to its accession talks. /Turkiye/

    [04] FIRST DIRECT FLIGHT FROM TRNC TO AZERBAIJAN IN ADDITION TO TURKEY

    A delegation from the Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus (TRNC) yesterday flew from Ercan Airport to Baku, Azerbaijan yesterday. This was the first direct flight from the TRNC in addition to Turkey. In the delegation was TRNC Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas, former TRNC President Rauf Denktas, businessmen, representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and journalists. The delegation is expected to hold contacts with the Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Murtuz Aleskerov and Foreign Minister Elmar Memmedyarov to discuss a number of issues, including bilateral relations and economic ties between the two countries. TRNC businessmen in the delegation will attend a business forum to contribute to improvement of economic ties between the two countries. /Turkiye/

    [05] BAHCELI CRITICIZES GOVT’S DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN POLICIES

    Speaking at a meeting of his party in Konya yesterday, Opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli criticized the government’s domestic and foreign policies. Bahceli said that in recent days the agenda of the state was determined by the terrorist group PKK. Bahceli further criticized policies of the United States and the European Union against the PKK, claiming that they sided by the supporters of the PKK. /Turkiye/

    [06] EU PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVES AND FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETINGS TO BE HELD THIS WEEK

    A meeting of the European Union permanent representatives (COREPER) will be held in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss Turkey’s EU talks and to decide whether to issue a declaration against Turkey’s supplementary declaration, which stated that signing the additional protocol didn’t mean recognition of Greek Cyprus. In related news, the EU Foreign Ministers meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss the accession framework document about Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/

    [07] TURKEY STAGE OF BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN OIL PIPELINE PROJECT COMPLETED

    One of the world’s biggest projects, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline project’s Turkey stage had been completed. The project which intends to carry the Caspian Sea oil to world market through Turkey, has been expected to draw income of $300 million. The project, which will export 50 million tons of oil and will convert Ceyhan into a city like Rotterdam of the Netherlands, reached Ceyhan crossing over a way of 1076 kilometers through Turkey. An investment breakthrough had started in the villages on the way of the pipeline. According to the terms of the project which was materialized with the support of the World Bank, 4 kilometers of surroundings of the oil pipeline and all the affected allocation units were accepted as the area to be supported. A source of $11 million has been reserved to 300 villages of 10 determined cities for education and health services. Also additional supports from the international aid institutions are provided besides the material support which oil pipeline procures. /Sabah/

    [08] 500 THOUSAND EURO FROM TURKEY FOR THE “ALLIANCE OF CIVILIZATIONS”

    The work which was being conducted after UN Secretary General Kofi Annan gave the task of conciliation of Islam world and Christian world to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero, had been completed. State Minister Mehmet Ali Aydýn, conducting the work on behalf of the prime minister, prepared Turkey report on the coordination of the initiative of “alliance of civilizations” plan. According to the program, Turkey will contribute 500 thousand Euro as an initial aid to the trust fund established for the “alliance of civilizations” plan. The government will provide 150 thousand Euro, and the rest will be provided from NGOs. Spain will contribute 1 million Euro to the project. /Sabah/

    [09] TOBB HEAD: “WITH ITS STRENGTHENING ECONOMY, TURKEY IS BECOMING INDISPENSABLE FOR THE EU”

    Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodities’ Exchanges (TOBB) Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu yesterday predicted that Turkey with its strengthening economy was becoming an indispensable country for the European Union. Hisarciklioglu said that by completion of Turkey’s accession talks, the EU would become stronger since Turkey has a sound economy both regionally and globally. “By including this strong economy, the EU will become stronger in the world,” he said. /Turkiye/
