[09] ARMENIANS' NEW INITIATIVE IN IRAN AND GERMANY
It has been learned that the Armenians want to
bring the so-called genocide claims to Iran's agenda after
successfully bringing it to the agendas of the US, France, Italy and
England. While the Turkish lobby has become active against the
Armenians' actions in Germany, Iran did not give the genocide claims a
warm welcome. Armenian claims were discussed in Germany first at the
Federal Parliemantary Application Commission. After the Armenian
diaspora collected 14,000 signatures and brought the claims to the
Commission's agenda, the Scientific Researches Center, attached to the
Federal Parliament, was appointed to prepare a report. This report
claims the Armenians were unjustly treated during incidents occurring
in World War I. Within this framework, the Turkish Associations in
Germany began to counter the Armenian diaspora by preparing brochures,
annnouncements and organizing conferences. Diplomatic sources say this
report, which includes the strongest Armenian claims, is not expected
to be approved by the German Parliament. /Aksam/
[10] TENSION BETWEEN TURKEY AND FRANCE CONTINUES IN SPORTS
The Directorate General of Youth and Sports are
among the institutions protesting French approval of the so-called
Armenian genocide bill. Director General of Youth And Sports, Kemal
Mutlu, declared they would not participate in sports events held in
France. Mutlu said in accordance with this decision, they would not
participate in eight activities which they had included their program
before. In addition to not inviting French teams to sporting events in
Turkey, Mutlu said they also would not purchase French sports

[11] DNA TO PROVE ARMENIAN CRUELTY
An exemplary work has begun in Erzurum, site of
harsh Armenian cruelty, to prove the truth for the so-called Armenian
genocide supporters. DNA tests will be done on bodies of the Turks
buried in mass graves after being massacred by the Armenians, and to
their relatives. If the results of these tests prove positive, then
the countries responsible for the cruelty will be sued for damages.
Chairman of the Armenian Cruelty Research Commission, lawyer Naci
Turan, recalled that the Armenians massacred many people in Erzurum
and the neighboring villages after World War I. He added that the
Commission had begun the process of recording them in official
documents in order to form a legal background. /Aksam/
[12] ADLER'S STATEMENT CONCERNING THE SO-CALLED ARMENIAN
GENOCIDE
Researcher and writer Alexandre Adler, famous for
his works on the former Soviet Union, compared the European Union (EU)
to the former Soviet Socialist Republics Union (SSCB) during his
speech on the so-called Armenian genocide at the annual meeting of the
Turco-French Friendship Commission. Alexandre Adler said, "The
French National Assembly and Senate took a negative decision and
unfortunately the socialist Jospin Government and the French President
Jacques Chirac were in agreement with this decision. 95% of the French
people are unaware of the incident and 25% of the Assembly and Senate
do not have any knowledge about the issue. The Soviet Union was very
restless because of Turkey's geographic situation in the region. Now,
the EU seems to be very restless because Turkey will be included into
the EU. Now the EU plays the role of the Soviet Union. It is as if
they undertook this duty by discussing the Armenian genocide at the
European Parliament and bringing the Kurdish problem to the

[13] MANGO: BRITISH TOURISTS DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE
ARMENIAN LAW
Attending a conference organized by the Ministry of
Tourism, famous British historian and author of the book titled
"Ataturk", Andrew Mango said British tourists did not care
about the French approval of the so-called Armenian genocide bill. He
conveyed his views on Turkey's tourism strategies. Mango said
promotion of Turkey as a comfortable and friendly country was very
important. Mango also stated Turkey should moderate its reactions to
the French approval of the so-called Armenian genocide bill. He added,
"Noone can solve anything through mutual accusations. Turkey
should not go to the extremes on the issue." /Cumhuriyet/
[14] DENKTAS IN MALATYA
Today the Malatya Municapility will organize a
'Meeting for Denouncing and Protesting France', which will be also
attended by the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
(TRNC) Rauf Denktas. Statement made by the Malatya Municipality said,
"The so-called Armenian genocide bill, accepted by the French
Parliament and approved by the French President Jacques Chirac, is the
result of a smear campaign. It was decided to organize the 'Meeting to
Denounce and Protest France' in order to demonstrate Malatya's
reaction to France, who heads the smear campaign. Participating in the
event are the provincial chairmen of the Democratic Left Party (DSP),
Nationalist Action Party (MHP), Motherland Party (ANAP), Virtue Party
(FP), True Path Party (DYP), Republican People's Party (CHP) and the
Great Union Party (BBP)." The meeting, which will also be
attended by Denktas as the main speaker, will be held on 7 February at

[15] FULL SUPPORT FROM THE US
Turkey under great pressure due to the European
Security and Defense Identity and isolated even in NATO, of which she
is a member, is seeing the results of the policy she has followed.
Messages by the new US Administration relieving Turkey are causing
concern for the Europeans. The three main messages given by US Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld have led the EU member countries to review
these issues. Rumsfeld had said, 'NATO is the backbone of the European
defense; we are against the weakening of the organization; the new
formation should be open to all NATO members wanting to participate in
it.'/Milliyet/
[16] 2,142 HIZBULLAH OPERATIONS HAVE BEEN MOUNTED
A statistical study regarding operations mounted in
Turkey against the terrorist organizations, Hizbullah and the
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), in Turkey disclosed results worth
noting. According to information compiled by an Anatolia news agency
correspondent, a total of 3,143 terrorists have been arrested while
4,180 detainees have been released as a result of 2,142 anti-Hizbullah
operations mounted in Southeastern Turkey in the last eight years.
More than 29,000 terrorists have been captured by the end of
operations mounted against the PKK, the statistical study revealed.

[17] ADDITIONAL INDICTMENT CONCERNING THE FP
The action brought against the Virtue Party (FP) in
the Constitutional Court claiming 'it is the continuation of a party
that was closed' took another dimension when the High Court of Appeals
Republican Chief Public Prosecutor Sabih Kanadoglu sent a 'additional
indictment'. The Constitutional Court is expected to evaluate the
additional indictment today. If the report is presented to the members
of the court, the Constitutional Court will decide whether or not to
accept the additional indictment. /Aksam/
[18] MINISTER OF STATE TOSKAY TO TRAVEL TO REPUBLIC OF
SOUTH AFRICA
Minister of State Tunca Toskay and an accompanying
delegation will travel to the Republic of South Africa between
February 12-18. Toskay said, "This country is very important
regarding Turkey's exports to the African countries." /Sabah/
[19] ANKARA TO GIVE VISA IN GAZZE
Turkey, which favors the Middle East peace process
and which plays a 'faciliating' role toward this end, is starting to
give visas to Palestinian citizens in Gazze. Ankara will begin giving
visas through an administrative attache to Palestinian citizens. An
administrative official from the Turkish Consul General in Jerusalem
will go to Gazze twice a week. The Turkish official will work at an
office allocated for him_her at the Palestinian Ministry of Justice.
It is pointed out that Turkey is the third country after the US and
England to carry out such a procedure. /Aksam/
[20] AIOC READY TO SUPPORT BAKU-CEYHAN
The consortium Azerbaijani International Operating
Company (AIOC) which operates the Azeri oil reserves in the Caspian
sea revealed on Tuesday it was ready to support the
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline project. AIOC President David Woodward
said that at the end of this month there would be a meeting in
Kazakhstan's capital of Astana. The aim would be to include Kazakh oil
into the pipeline. It is widely thought that Kazakh oil will make a
positive contribution to the feasibility of the pipeline. Drawing
attention to the importance of Kazakh oil to strengthen the positions
of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, Woodward indicated that Kazakh oil
was integral for the pipeline, but it would also be wrong to depend
too heavily on Kazakh oil. /Turkish Daily News/
[21] DUTCH INTEREST IN GAP
Chairman of the Dutch Agricultural Investments
Consulting Firm DLV Agricosult, Willem Tacken, will visit Sanliurfa
for business discussions. According to the statement by the GAP
(Southeastern Anatolia Project) Regional Development Administration
Directorate, Tacken is expected to arrive in Sanliurfa today and will
be informed on the latest developments in the GAP. /Cumhuriyet/
[22] TURKSAT 2A'S PERFORMANCE BETTER THAN EXPECTED
Turkey's third satellite, Turksat 2A, has
successfuly completed its orbit tests. Manager of the satellite
Eurasiasat said Turksat 2A's performance was better than expected.

[23] ITALIAN JOURNALIST BENEFITS FROM AMNESTY
Italian journalist Domiano Giovanni Frusillo, who
received a one year prison sentence by Diyarbakir's State Security
Court No. 3 benefited from the Conditional Release and Posponement of
Punishments Law after his sentence was overturned by the High Court of

[24] AGCA'S DEMAND FOR A PARDON REJECTED
The Ministry of Justice rejected Mehmet Ali Agca's
demand to benefit from the amnesty law. Agca had wanted the court's
decision rejecting his demand to be sent to the Hight Court of
Appeals. However, the Ministry of Justice did not accept his appeal.
Agca could not benefit from the amnesty law. /Cumhuriyet/
[25] TEKEL TO BE PRIVATIZED
The process of privatizing TEKEL (State monopoly)
has begun. The sale of TEKEL will be completed within three years.
TEKEL's privatization decision was published in the Official Gazette
yesterday. TEKEL's privatization is in line with the letter of intent

[26] PROFESSOR SENGOR'S INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS
Istanbul Technical University Rector Gulsun
Saglamer presented a shield to Prof. Celal Sengor who was elected
member of the US Natioanal Academy of Sciences. Sengor was elected to
the Academy after his successful geological investigations following
the August 17 Marmara earthquake. Sengor is the first Turkish
scientist elected to the Academy. /Sabah/
[27] IMF DECIDES TO GIVE LOAN TO TURKEY
After the Turkish government promised to enact the
Electricity Market Law by 15 February, the International Monetary Fund
(IMF) released a loan amounting to 1.4 billion US dollars. The
Executive Board of IMF approved delivery of the stand by loan slice
totalling 300 million US dollars and the Additional Reserve Facility
slice totalling 1.1 billion US dollars to Turkey. Chairman of the IMF,
Horst Kohler, evauated the Turkish government's implementions as
'encouraging and successful'. Kohler added, "The determination
that the Turkish government has displayed up to now contributes both
to the renewal of confidence in the markets and the decreasing
inflation rate in Turkey." /Aksam/
[28] ADDITIONAL INTENT LETTER GIVEN TO THE IMF ANNOUNCED
The additional letter of intent given to the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) was announced. The letter was signed
by the Minister of State Responsible for Economy, Recep Onal, and
Central Bank Governor, Gazi Ercel. Stating that confidence in the
market has been gradually maintained after the 2000 financial crisis,
the letter said, "We are determined to follow the strategy
outlined in the letter of intent prepared on December 18, 2000. The
Treasury Undersecretary stated that all principles mentioned in the
letter of intent given to the IMF should be closely followed.

[29] PEARSON ON THE TURKISH ECONOMY
Pearson delivered a speech at the opening of 'The
US Commercial and Financial Services' seminar organized at the
Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO). He said, "I can understand it
clearly that Turkey has perfect economic and commercial potential. We,
as the US mission in Turkey, want to benefit from this potential.
Commerce has increased by 70% since 1994 and Turkish exports to the US
increased by 15% on 1999-2000." Pearson then addressed the
businessmen who attended the seminar saying, "We are looking
forward to working with you in the upcoming months and years. We also
want to strengthen the commercial links between Turkey and the

[30] TURKISH EXPORTS TO THE US: 3 BILLION US DOLLARS
Turkish exports to the US reached 6.6 billion US
dollars except the minimum expense of foreign commerce volume for the
year 2000. According to the US data, Turkish exports to the US
amounted to 3 billion US dollars, an increase of 17% in 2000 when
compared to 1999. Meanwhile, the amount of imports reached 3.6 billion
US dollars. Thus, the trade volume between Turkey and the US increased
by 64% during the last six years. /Aksam/
[31] ADDITIONAL MEASURES IN ECONOMY
The government partners after meeting with industry
representatives, decided to begin implementing certain additional
measures next week to relieve the markets. Stating all sectors were
experiencing problems stemming from the latest economic crisis, Deputy
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said they would begin implementing certain
economic decisions without making any concessions to the economic

[32] TURKEY PLACES FOURTH IN WORLD CARD MARKET
Turkey placed first in Europe with a 59.9 %
increase in the Mastercard purchases. Turkey placed third again in
Europe with a 36.4 % increase in the purchase of the Maestro card.
Eurasia Region Director General of Europay International, Ozlem
Ercelen Imece, stated that Turkey placed fourth in the world card
market after Germany, Britain and Netherlands. She said their aim was

[33] VAN TO EXPORT TROUSERS TO BRITAIN
Van Textile affiliated with the Van Province
Administration will export 100 thousands Golf trousers to Britain. Van
Governor Durmus Koc said Van Textile has become an important company

[34] DISNEYLAND IN KUSADASI
Disneyland World, founder and manager of the
world-famous Disneyland entertainment centers, has presented a
proposal to Kusadasi Municipality. Disneyland world would like to turn
Guvercinada, which is the symbol of Kusadasi, into an enterntainment
center. Mayor of Kusadasi, Fuat Dogan, said, "Officials will come
to Kusadasi concerning the proposal and then the meetings will begin

[35] TURKISH DIRECTOR REPRESENTS GERMANY IN INTERNATIONAL
BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL BERLINALE
International Berlin Film Festival Berlinale will
begin today. Director Fatih Akin of Turkish origin represents Germany
in the international jury choosing the Golden Bear Award. Additionaly
Turkish director Ferzan Ozpetek's film "Le fate ignorati"

Columnist Metin Toker comments on Turkey's
indignation at the French National Assembly passing a law on the
so-called Armenian genocide. A summary of his column is as follows:
"Turkey has every right to be angry with France over the
so-called Armenian genocide issue. The law's passage in the French
National Assembly and the lack of any preventive effort on the part of
the Administration to have their basis in local election
considerations. However satisfying, anger does not free Turkey from
the trap of the 'domino theory' she has fallen into due to her own
mistakes. The best way to break free of the trap is by speedily
activating international law. The massacres of the Jews were justly
defined as a 'Holocaust' and a new type of crime was defined at the
Nuremberg Trials following the Second World War. Throughout the
history of mankind many similar, tragic events have occurred such as,
unilateral or reciprocal massacres, the cruelties the Incas and
American Indians were subjected to, the fields full of people lit
afire by the Khmer Rouge, African clans destroying one another.
However, these are only similar. The 'Final Solution' decision was
taken in 1940. Now, Armenians are trying to lump what can be seen as
'mutual massacres' or 'tragedies of war' into the basket with
'genocide. A decision such as the 'Final Solution' was never made on
the Bosphorus. It is not the time to wallow in the sweet taste of
anger, but to have it accepted by the international law as soon as
possible that these incidents cannot be defined as genocide."
