Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press
this morning.
[01] US SUPPORT FOR CEM
Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, who is in the US to attend the UN
52nd term General Meeting, met with his American counterpart,
Madeleine Albright. After the meeting Cem evaluated the meeting as
"very fruitful" and added that he had expressed Turkey's anxiety on
arms build-up in the East Mediterranean. /Sabah/
[02] CEM: AGENDA 2000 DISTURBS TURKEY
Conferring with EU Foreign Affairs Commisioner Hans Van Der Broek
within the framework of his contacts at the UN General Assembly in New
York, Cem said that "Turkey is disturbed by the Agenda 2000 report"
prepared by the EU. Cem stressed that "if a full membership
perspective is not given to Turkey at the Luzembourg summit, the
Turkish people will loose interest in the drive for integration with
Europe". Cem also warned the commissioner that the Greek Cypriot
purchase of Russian-made S-300 missiles had complicated further the
Cyprus problem. /All papers/
[03] SEZGIN SLAMS RUSSIAN DELEGATION OVER S-300 MISSILES
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Ismet Sezgin slammed
the visiting Russian military delegation for the possible transfer of
S-300 missiles to the Greek Cypriots. Sezgin received a delegation of
Russian officials visiting Ankara in connection with the International
Defense Industry and Civil Aviation Fair (IDEF'97). The Turkish
Defense Minister noted that Russian efforts to transfer the missiles
to Southern Cyprus were not consistent with the deep-rooted friendship
between Russia and Turkey. /Milliyet/
[04] CROSS-BORDER MILITARY OPERATION
The Turkish Armed Forces have initiated a cross-border operation
in Northern Iraq against the PKK terrorist organization. Some ten
thousand Turkish troops backed by F-16 and F-4 jet fighters are being
deployed in the operation. /All papers/
[05] PARRIS, TURKEY IS IMPORTANT FOR U.S.
Mark Parris, new U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, said at the Senate
Foreign Relations Commission that Turkey was important for America
because of Turkey's efforts to integrate and cooperate with Europe for
70 years, copperation in Korea for 50 years, in the Gulf Crisis, in
Somalia and Bosnia. He added that he would do his best to solve the
Turkish-Greek problem and the Cyprus issue. /Hurriyet, Milliyet/
[06] VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN THE TURKISH ECONOMY
The noted financial company Merril Lynch has praised the Turkish
government for its successful economic policies and invited foreign
entrepreneurs to invest in Turkey. In a report on Turkey, Merril
Lynch predicts that 1998 will be much better for the Turkish economy
than 1997. The report describes the Ylimaz government as "determined
to implement the reforms" needed for the stability and prosperity of
the country, and adds that the first moves undertaken by the cabinet
were "hope-inspiring". /Sabah/
[07] HAZELNUT EXPORTS REACH ONE BILLION DOLLARS
The government has increased hazelnut prices, and now observers
expect a boom in revenues from hazelnut exports. Hazelnut exports
have become the fourth largest export revenue source for Turkey after
tourism, textiles and the automotive sector. Sales to foreign
countries for the last 19 days amount to $74 million - two times more
than foreign sales realized last year. So far, hazelnut prices have
been set by European brokers, but this year the government increased
hazelnut prices to $427, eliminating the brokers' influence on price
fluctuations. /Hurriyet/
[08] TURKEY-ISRAEL-US MANEUVRES POSTPONED
US Naval Forces Spokesman, Sergent Patrick Moore, announced
yesterday that military maneuvres to be staged with the participation
of Turkey, Israel and the US in November have been postponed for three
months. Arab countries have voiced their concern that the exercises
that were to be held in the eastern Mediterranean posed a threat to
regional security. /Milliyet/
[09] PKK A BLOCK TO PEACE
In a new report on northern Iraq sent to the US Congress,
President Clinton stresses that the major block to peace in the region
is the terrorist PKK organization. Clinton notes that the PKK has
actively resisted the efforts of UN sponsored peace forces stationed
in northern Iraq. The PKK also seeks to undermine efforts to restore
peace between the opposing Kurdish factions active in the area.

[10] TURKEY BUYS FIVE NAVAL VESSELS FROM FRANCE
The Turkish Armed Forces have brought five French naval mine
hunters to beef up the effectiveness of the navy. Although the
vessels are not new, navy representatives say they are happy with the
purchase, especially as "we got them for a good price." The agreement
for the five Circe class minehunters was signed yesterday in Ankara.

[11] EUROPEAN PACKING SUMMIT IN ISTANBUL
Representatives of the European packing industry will meet today
in Istanbul. 250 delegates from 18 countries will attend the annual
meeting of the European Cardboard Manufacturers' Association (ECMA) in
Istanbul. Turkey will be represented by the Cardboard Packing
Industrialists' Association (KASAD). /Hurriyet/
[12] ALLIANCE SHARES TO BE SOLD IN TURKEY
Shares of one of the leading management firms, Alliance Capital
Management (ACM), will be sold in Turkey. An Eczacibasi Group
subsidiary will conduct shares. General Director of ACM, H.
Williams, will come to Turkey on 7 October to promote the share sales.
