Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning
[01] ECONOMICS AND IMAGE-BUILDING ON ISLAMIC AGENDA
Muslim nations, holding their annual meeting of foreign ministers
this week, will seek to increase economic cooperation. Indonesia,
hosting the ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference (OIC) for the first time, is eager to promote economic
cooperation and development among its 53 member states.
Industry and Trade Minister Yalim Erez will represent Turkey at the
meeting. Ezer said at a press conference on Sunday at Ankara's Esenboga
Airport that Turkey's strengthened relations with Islamic countries was
also important for the West. Erez said the OIC worked in close
coooperation with the UN, trying to find solutions to international
problems and trying to increase economic relations between member

[02] TURKEY HAS SUFFERED THE MOST FROM THE EMBARGO ON IRAQ
Iraqi Ambassador Rafi Al Tikriti said that Turkey has suffered from
the embargo against Iraq more than Jordan so it was only right that
Turkey be given the same trade privileges that Jordan had, the Anatolia
news agency reported.
Tikriti said that the UN had allowed Jordan special privileges in
its trade with Iraq but that Turkey's losses from the embargo against
Iraq had reached $40 billion. Turkey has had to work hard in order to
get the same privileges, Tikriti said.
[03] CILLER'S STATEMENT
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller said
yesterday that the necessary mechanisms already existed within the North
Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for handling disputes between member
states. In a written statement, Ciller said that efforts by Greece to
urge the Alliance to establish such a mechanism to deal with disputes
between Ankara and Athens amounted to an "exercise in futility". Ciller
also announced that she had sent a letter to Greek Foreign Minister
Theodoros Pangalos on November 29 concerning his proposal that disputes
between NATO members in an expanded alliance should be taken to the
International Court of Justice in The Hague. Ciller said she had
indicated in her letter that Turkey also believed, like Greece, that
NATO's effectiveness must be preserved, even after it expands by
admitting former members of the Warsaw pact. /All papers/
[04] MORE US-LINKED NORTHERN IRAQIS ARRIVE IN TURKEY
In the latest stage of a US-sponsored evacuation, 650 northern
Iraqis entered Turkey from Silopi on Sunday bringing the total number to
1,700, the Anatolia news agency reported. They will eventually be
resettled in the US.
[05] PKK MILITANTS ATTACK SOUTHEASTERN TOWN OF MIDYAT
Separatist militants from the PKK terrorist organization attacked
security forces in Midyat near the southeastern town of Mardin. The
Anatolia news agency reorted that a group of heavily armed PKK
terrorists attacked the Midyat police headquarters with grenade
launchers late on Saturday. Security forces repelled the attack without
suffering any casualties.
[06] TURKISH BUSINESSMEN IN ATHENS
The arrival of Turkish businessmen in Athens to attend a meeting of
the Turkey-Greece Joint Business Council due to begin today, has been
the focus of wide-spread interest in that country according to the
Anatolia news agency reporting from the Greek capital.
Turkish industrial magnate Rahmi Koc, who heads the Turkish
delegation, and a large number of other Turkish businessmen and
industrialists are expected in Athens today, Anatolia said.
[07] TURKISH EXPORTS UP IN JAN-NOV 1996
Turkish exports rose 4.4 % to $21.333 billion in the first 11
months of the year from $20.434 billion in the same 1995 period, the
Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TIM) said in a statement on Friday. It
said November exports rose to 4.8 % to $2.261 billion from $2.158
billion a year ago. /All papers/
[08] UN SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR CYPRUS TO VISIT TURKEY
The UN Secretary-General's special representative for Cyprus, Han
Sun-Joo is to visit Turkey this week. Although Ankara is waiting for
new initiatives to try and solve the Cyprus problem, diplomatic circles
are not expecting a new plan from Sun-Joo. /All papers/
