    FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1996

Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

[01] GERMANY KEEPS TO HARD-LINE POLICY AGAINST PKK

The German Parliament has harshly condemned the violent attacks of the out-lawed organization, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), in a draft resolution. The resolution was unanimously accepted on 5 December in a session on human rights. The draft resolution criticizes the PKK for the violent attacks it carries out against innocent people. The resolution also demands that the Turkish government improve human rights and accelerate the democratization process./Cumhuriyet/

    [02] WEU PROMOSES MEMBERSHIP DEAL

After eight hours of heated debate, Turkish deputies in the Western European Union (WEU) Parliamentary Assembly obtained late on 4 December the assembly's support to "accomodate Turkey's participation in WEU forces in the MediterrAnean with a view to preparing for its accession to membership in the WEU in the near future to WEU and, in due course, in the European Union."

Also, Turkey's desire to become a full member of the WEU was duly highlighted. Another positive aspect of the report was that it took the view that the European Union and the WEU were disqualified from acting as mediators between Turkey and Greece, including involvement in the Cyprus question, because the two countries had different status in those organizations. /All papers/
