[01] PNT-CD vs. Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin
The leadership of the Christian Democratic - National Peasant Party (PNT-
CD), the main party in the Romanian governing coalition, said on Monday
that they will ask for the dismissal of Foreign Minister Adrian Severin
unless he can prove the accusations he made against a number of party
leaders and newspaper directors as alleged spies of foreign secret
services. Mr. Severin is one of Democratic Party (PD) leaders, the most
important coalition partner of the PNT-CD. He had made those accusations
last Monday, referring to the evidence he would have seen. PNT-CD Scretary
General Radu Vasile said that, without naming the incriminated persons and
making public that evidence, the foreign minister has raised suspicions in
the Romanian public opinion putting the current political regime under
doubt. However, Mr. Radu Vasile said that a decision over Mr. Severin would
be made within the governing coalition. RRI-RADOR, October 7
[02] Press conference of the BNR Governor
During his press conference on Monday, the Governor of the Romanian
National Bank (BNR) Mugur Isarescu presented some of the decisions made at
the IMF and World Bank annual reunion on late September. The main decision
of this reunion regarded the increase of Romania's IMF part from 754.1
million DTS up to 1,100 million, around 1.5 billion dollars. During the
meeting, there has been a stress over the fact that a strong banking system
requires all banks with problems to be driven out of the system in order to
allow an effective economic policy to be operative. The governor of the
Romanian National Bank also said that all IMF performance requirements have
been fulfilled until September 30 and that the BNR hard currency reserve
were then up to 2.6 million dollars with growing chances to raise up to 3
billion dollars until December 31. Speaking about the exchange rates, the
Governor said he believes "the short term dynamics of the leu exchange rate
would not make national currency investments to prove less productive than
foreign currency ones. RADOR, October 7

IBRD granted Romania a 70 million dollar loan for the rehabilitation of
some 900 pre-universitary education units with serious quake caused
damages. Quoting the Romanian finance minister said that he 20 year loan

expenses are to be covered by the loan granted to Romania by the Social
