[01] Romania at the annual meeting of IMF and World Bank
Preparations for the IMF and World Bank annual meeting started in Hong Kong
on Thursday, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (September 18, 9:00 hours) reports.
Romanian delegation participating in the meeting included Mugur Isarescu,
Governor of the National Bank of Romania and Finance Minister Mircea
Ciumara. Among other issues, delegates will discuss the current situation
and future prospects in world economy, opportunities of improving the IMF
financing ability, economic performance of countries in transition to
market economy, ways of fighting poverty and unemployment and the financial
situation in the two institutions. RADOR, September 19
[02] Romanian Senate session
On Thursday, the Senate adopted the draft law for implementing the
Government Ordinancce 39/1997. The Ordinance concerns the retirement of
women working in the mining industry. The women have the posibility to
retire two years sooner than former law stipulated. RADOR, September 19
[03] Reform Council Communique
The Reform Council has declared that foreign business circles should not be
worried about virtual cancelation of the government emmergency Ordinance
nr.31/1997 concerning foreign investment regime in Romania. The Ordinance
has been adopted by the House of Deputies. The Executive decisiom is aimed
at creating a single investment law for both foreign and Romanian investors,
but Emmergency Ordinance 48/1997 is not to be lifted. RADOR, September 19
[04] Democratic Party (PD) concerned about mining situation
The mining restructuring is to be finalised in three years and it will cost
some 1,200 billion lei, said Nicolae Staiculescu, State Secretary in the
Ministry of Industry and Trade Nicolae Staiculescu at PD press conference.
He also declared that in the next two weeks the mining sectors would be
reorganised. The World Bank and European Community already announced their
support in the process. "The current coal supply is about 9 million tons
which means that necessary coal winter supplies is assured", Mr.

[05] Romania could become an economic miracle
"European Economic Union, Its Problems and Romania" was the theme o a
conference held by Anghel Rugina, an American scientist of Romanian
descent. The conference was hosted by the Romanian Academy on Thursday. EEU
faces a crisis and Romania's virtual membership would reduce its hard
currency and gold reserve. "I am convinced that Romania has all opportunity
to become an economic miracle. Only four weeks would be neede to study and
elaborate a stability plan for the national economy, using mainly Romanian
experts", Mr. Rugina concluded. RADOR, September 19

Weather in Romania will be unstable in most of the country. Rains are
forecast especially in north-western regions. Temperatures will range from
