[02] New Romanian efforts to get NATO first round membership
As of Monday, the speaker of Romanian Senate, Petre Roman, is on a visit to
the United States. In his talks with influential congressmen, Petre Roman
is trying to determine a decision favourable to Romania as regards
integration into the North-Atlantic Alliance in the first wave. In another
development, the former sovereign of Romania, HM King Michael I, spoke at
the Mansfeld Hall of the National Library in Luxemburg about the topic
"Romania and NATO - thr moment of a real partnership' - a plea for
Romania's integration in the first round of NATO's enlargement. In an
interview with a newspaper in Luxemburg, the former sovereign said that the
leg in Luxemburg of his series of visits to European constitutional
monarchies is important, as the Grand Dukedom wull take over the presidency
of the European Union at a crucial moment for Romania, in June, while the
countries which will join NATO first are to be nominated later on, in
Madrid. He also expressed the hope that the Romanian approach will be
succsessful, evincing the fact that honesty and courage are not only
virtues of the Romanian people but also the assets of its victory.
Bucharest continues its diplomatic efforts to win all the members of the
North-Atlantic Alliance on its side. The latter have not reach a consensus
yet as regards the first wave of NATO's enlargement. Romania is actively
supported by France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Belgium, Greece,
Turkey and Luxemburg, countries which would like the first wave to include
five candidate states. Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, Holland and Germany
are still hesitating while the US would prefer an enlargement limited to
the favourites Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary. RRI-RADOR, June 3
[03] Could the French elections' result affect Romania's NATO candidacy?
In the wake of the second ballot in the legislative elections held on
Sunday in France, the socialists got 275 seates, the communists 38 seates
and the right wing coallition 253 sats. It is for the third time when
France has an indefinite cohabitation regime. Between 1986 ands 1995, left
wing president Francois Mitterrand cohabitated with right wing prime
ministers Jacques Chirac and Edouard Balladur. The Romanian foreign
minister Adrian Severin expressed his belief that in the context of the
general strategy of the foreign policy of France, the options of the new
government in Paris will favour the further development of the Romania-
French privileged relations. Highly apprectating the approaches of France
and of president Cgirac in favour of Romania's integration into the Euro-
Atlantic structures, Bucharest is convinced that it will further enjoy the
firm support of Paris for the accession to NATO in the first wave and for
integration in the European union, a communique released on Monday in
Bucharest by the Romanian Foreign Ministry points out. RRI-RADOR, June 3
