[01] Italian prime minister Romano Prodi in Bucharest
"Italy's decision to support Romania's accession to NATO is irrevocable",
Italian prime minister Romano Prodi syayed on Monday during his brief visit
to Bucharest. The Italian prime minister was received by Romanian president
Emil Constantinescu, the speakers of the two houses in Romanian parliament,
Petre Roman and Ion Diaconescu, and had talks with his Romanian counterpart
Victor Ciorbea. Romano Prodi pointed put that his country had always fought
for the development of NATO structures in the southern regions of European
continent in order to reach a balance between North and South. He also
expressed his gratitude for the participation of the 400 Romanian military
in multinational protection force in Albania. Romano Prodi also noted the
sppecial relationship between the two countries and mentioned the
increasing but already strong presence of Italian investors in Romania.
Right now Italy is the second biggest investing cuntry in Romania, very
close to Germany. In his turn, Romanian prime minister Victor Ciorbea
underscored that this first visit to Bucharest by an Italian prime minister
in 20 years represents a particular moment for the consolidation of
bilateral relations. He evoked in this respect the joint declaration of the
strategic partnership and bilateral relations in political, economic,
cultural and legal fields recently signed in Rome by foreign ministers of
Romania and Italy. The two prime ministers inaugurated on Monday the new
location on the Romana Square of the "Lupa Capitolina" monument donated in
1906 to Bucharest by the city of Rome. RRI-RADOR, May 6
[02] Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin in Strasbourg
Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin participates on Monday and Tuesday
in the looth session of the Ministers' Committee of the Council of Europe.
Upon his departure for Strasbourg, Adrian Severin declared that the
situation of the Council of Europe will be examined under the conditions of
its turning into a genuine pan-European organization. The problem posed on
this occasion is how will it succeed to further be the supreme protector of
the assets of democracy. The Strasbourg meeting will also prepare the
summit of the Council of Europe due in October. RRI-RADOR, May 6
[03] NATO meeting in Brussels
On Monday Brussels hosted a session of NATO military and political
steerning committee attended by representatives of member states and a
Romanian delegation made up of experts from the Ministry of Defence and
Foreign Affairs. The talks are mainly aimed to make an assessment of
Romania's participation in the Partnership for Peace in 1996 and of the
programme for 1997 - 1999.Romania, which is the first country to join the
Partnership for Peace, participated in 1996 in around 300 activities
included in the Partnership for Peace. Between 1997 and 1998, Romania is
going to take part in other 44 similar exercises. This means Romania meets
the basic military criteria required for becoming a member of the Alliance.
Romanian army participated in joint peacekeeping operations with EU
military forces in Bosnia- Hercegovina, Albania and Angola. During a
similar session held last week Romanian prime minister presented our
country's activities within the Partnership for Peace as one of Romania's
arguments for joining NATO in the first wave. RRI-RADOR, May 6
[04] Romanian president Emil Constantinescu met leaders of the governing
coalition
Romanian president Emil Constantinescu said that the Treaty with Ukraine
initiated in Kiev on Saturday was the last stage of the Romanian policy
which in less than a year managed to ensure good and stable relations with
all its neighbours. During a meeting with leaders of the governing
coalition in Romania, president Constantinescu said that the treaty also
includes an agreement of setting up two euro-regions where free economic

[05] Conference in Bucharest
Between May 5-6, Bucharest hosts a special session of the UNESCO-UNICEF
joint committee for education. The session is attended by UNESCO director
general Federico Mayor and by the UNICEF executive director Ms Carol
Bellamy as well as by representatives of executive councils of two UN
agencies. The session will focus on the specific programmes of the two
organizations in the field of compulsory education as well as on the most
efficient ways of cooperation with a view to strengthening global and

Weather in Romania is sunny almost all around the country. Some rain falls
are possible in north-western regions. Temperaturres range from 11
