  • [01] Romanian forces in Albania

Romanian parliament approved the country's participation in the multinational protection force in Albania. A contingent of 400 military specially trained for this type of operationswill be deployed in southern Albania starting April 14. The expenses of the mission, estimated at 19 billion lei (about 12 mmillion dollars), will be covered by the Romanian government. Romania has taken part in international missions in the Gulf, Somalia, Angola and Bosnia. The decision to send troops to Albania is political, the president of the senate Petre Roman declared, in conformity with the international accords signed by Romania and with the national defence law which allows troops for peace keeping or humanitarian actions to be sent. Petre Roman also said that the decision reflects Romania's option to join NATO. Five of the countries which will contribute troops to the mission are part of the southern flank of the alliance: Greece, Turkey, Spain and Italy. They will be joined by military from Austria and Denmark. The 6,000 soldiers will be deployed in Albania for three months, the aim of the mission being to secure the transport of humanitarian aid to Albania where the upsurge thatt started three months ago in the South has caused at least 350 casualties. The rebels' arms were stolen from depots and barracks. The rebels demand president Berisha's resignation. Most of them are victims the pyramid type of games.RRI-RADOR, April 11

[02] President of the European Commission is in Bucharest for a two day visit

The president oof the European Commision Jacques Santer is on a two day visit to Bucharest. In a speech before the two houses of Romania parliament he said: "I assure youu of support and solidarity of the EU through all the difficult period of transition. Together we must find the best way to capitalize the invetiveness of the Romanian people, its resources, traditions and the strategic position of your country". Jacques Santer also said that if Romania implemented the programme of reforms announced by prime minister Ciorbea, efforts would be made to receive support from the international institutions for reaching the goals the programme included. "The EU", Mr Santer said, "would give aid worth 70 million dollar ECU to Romania to redress the balance of payments. Aware of the high social costs of the reform, of the increase in unemployment and decrease in living standards, the EU would contribute 30 million ECU from the PHARE budget to support an emergency programme". Romania has been an associate of the EU since 1995. The visit to Bucharest of the European Commission president Jacques Santer takes place at a crucial time for the enlargement of the organization, when negotiations go on with the countries which have applied for EU membership as Romania did.RRI-RADOR, April 11
