[02] The International Monetary Fund will grant a credit worth more than 1 billion dollars to Romania

The International Monetary Fund will grant a credit worth more than 1 billion dollars to Romania, said on Monday Paul Thomsen, chief negotiator of the International Monetary Fund, after his meeting with the Romanian president, Emil Constantinescu. Mr Thomsen characterized the reform proposed by the Ciorbea cabinet as "very good and very ambitious". The credit granted by the International Monetary Fund will pursue the implementation of macrostability in Romania and will lead, on a short term basis, to the curbing of inflation and the healing of the financial system. In his turn, the Romanian president declared: "In this very moment, Romania either implements the reform, or collapses". Mr Constantinescu expressed his belief that in spite of the high social costs, the positive results will emerge in one year, at the latest. For the first time after 50 years the Romanians will pay a price which will have a meaning, president Constantinescu said. RRI-RADOR, February 18

An accord on the protection and exchange of military secrets between Romania and Hungary was signed in the Hungarian town Debrecen. [04] Railway transport fees in Romania will double

Starting on Monday, railway transport fees will double and freight transportation will go up by 80 per cent, announced the Romanian transport minister, Traian Basescu. He also added that fees for public transportation should have gone up 3.5 times to cover the losses suffered by the Romanian Railway Company. Instead, it has been decided to only double prices in order to partially cover for the losses. Romanian officials say the rise of the prices is caused not only by the evolution of the exchange rate, but also by the losses in the activity of the Romanian Railway Company. One of the measures for covering the losses is to cancel the unprofitable trains. RRI- RADOR, February 18
