[01] New visit in Romania by American congressman Tom Lantos
American congressman Tom Lantos is paying a two day visit to Romania. Talks
with authorities in Bucharest will approach Romanian - US ties, Romania's
integration into NATO and European Union, this country's relations with its
neighbours and ethnic minorities issues. Tom Lantos is on his 6-th visit to
Romania. He is associated president of Human Rights working group in the US
Congress and one of the most influential members of the US legislative
body. In 1996 he pleaded for permanent granting of the Most Favoured Nation
status to Romania.RRI, January 30
[02] Romania's relations with Council of Europe
Relations between Romania and Council of Europe were subject of talks in
Strasbourg on Wednesday between Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin
and Council officials. Romanian Foreign Minister met Secretary General
Daniel Tarschys and President of Parliamentary Asembly of this European
forum, Ms Lenny Fischer.RRI, January 30
[03] Romania's strategy to get NATO membership
Romania's integration into NATO in the first wave is the main aim pursued
by the Foreign Policy Comission of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house
of Romania's Parliament. Victor Bostinaru, chairman of the comission, has
underlined the comission main strategy: establishing contacts with similar
bodies of NATO states' parliaments, with those of the applicant states, and
institutional level of a permanent relationship with Romanian diaspora.RRI,

[04] Presidential consultations
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu continued his consultations with
representatives of parliamentary parties. After meeting leaders of Greater
Romania Party and of Romanians' National Unity Party on Wednesday the head
of state met leading members of Party of Social Democracy of Romania, the
main opposition party. The party leader Ion Iliescu said afterwards he was
satisfied with results of the talks. Ion Iliescu assured the press of his
party's support for all rational measures imposed by the economic reform
and in the anti-corruption struggle, but he warned against danger of
politicizing this struggle and creating sources of instability.RRI,

[05] Popular support in struggle against corruption
In Romania a resolute start was made in the anti-corruption struggle
enjoying the active support of the population and an extremely favourable
reaction in international circles - stated in Bucharest on Wednesday
President Emil Constatinescu, at the first meeting of National Council of
Action against Corruption and Organized Crime. The Council brings together
the Prime Minister, the Interior, Justice and Defence Ministers, Prosecutor
General, heads of Intelligence Services, Audit Court and Fraud Squad. The
Council decided on drawing up a national programme to fight corruption and
organized crime and on setting up working teams to eliminate Mafia
structures from sectors of oil and agriculture which, Romanian President
said, "seriously undermine the country's energy and food security".RRI,

[06] Romanian bus involved in an accident in Hungary
The collision in Hungary of two buses from Romania and Italy this Wednesday
left one Romanian and one Italian dead and injured another 23 persons -
FRANCE PRESSE reports. First investigations show that for unknown reasons
the Italian bus made a sudden turn and collided with the Romanian one.RRI,
