[01] Government answers to the accusations made by the opposition
The government answered yesterday to the critics made in a statement by the
Party of Social Democracy of Romania, in opposition, which considers that
the measures of rising the fuel prices can generate an economic chaos, an
uncontrolled inflation, and encroach upon the promises made during the
electoral campaign. The communique of the Cabinet reproaches the present
opposition its unfair behavior by launching such attacks in an extremely
difficult period for the country and the people, especially that the
incriminated measures were obligatory as the former government hadn't
adjusted periodically the prices, as it would have been required. As a
resut the price of oil products had become lower than the production one,
and that would have thrown the national economy into chaos. The present
price modifications are meant to inhibit the inflation, appreciates the

Today the orthodox and Greek-Catholic Christians celebrate the holy day
Epiphany. At the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest the holy service will
be officiated by His Holiness, Patriarch Teoctist. In keeping with the
tradition, in localities situated on river banks or by the sea, the priests
throw the Cross into the frozen water and those who bring it out will be
blessed and given the eucharist, for their forgiveness and sin
purification.RRA-RADOR, January 6th,1997
