Washington -- The White House says President Clinton met with Turkish Prime Minister Yilmaz December 19 and that their meeting "symbolized the long- standing and close relationship that Turkey and the United States enjoy.

"The two leaders discussed areas of mutual interest, including energy, trade and investment, regional cooperation, security cooperation, Aegean and Cyprus issues," the statement said. "In addition, they discussed Prime Minister Yilmaz's human rights and economic reform plans."

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Yilmaz

The President met with Turkish Prime Minister Yilmaz today. Their meeting symbolized the long-standing and close relationship that Turkey and the United States enjoy. The two leaders discussed areas of mutual interest, including energy, trade and investment, regional cooperation, security cooperation, Aegean and Cyprus issues. In addition, they discussed Prime Minister Yilmaz's human rights and economic reform plans.

Prime Minister Yilmaz also met with the Vice President and the Secretaries of State, Treasury, Defense and Energy. He will meet this evening with Commerce Secretary Daley. The meetings have been highly productive, and we look forward to much high-level interaction over the coming months.
