U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
OFFICE OF THE SPOKESMAN
TAKEN QUESTION DECEMBER 4, 1997
AEGEAN TERRITORIAL DISPUTES
Q: What is U.S. policy toward territorial and other disputes in the Aegean?
Was it affected by the December 1 NATO agreement?
A: We understand that Greece and Turkey have agreed in principle to a plan
to revamp the NATO command structure in the Aegean, in the context of an
overall realignment of NATO command structure. We see this agreement as a
noteworthy step forward in the effort to improve confidence in the
Aegean.
This agreement is not directly related to any territorial dispute. The U.S.
believes that Greece and Turkey should resolve any territorial dispute
through a mutually acceptable dispute resolution mechanism such as the
International Court of Justice.
