(Clinton meets with Gligorov June 17) (260)

Washington -- President Clinton met with President Kiro Gligorov of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) June 17 and called that country a model of stability in a very turbulent region, according to a White House statement.

Clinton "praised President Gligorov for his statesmanship in resolving differences with his neighbors and promoting ethnic tolerance at home," the statement said.

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
June 17, 1997

MEETING WITH PRESIDENT KIRO GLIGOROV
OF THE FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA

President Clinton welcomed President Kiro Gligorov of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the White House today. The two leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues. President Clinton noted that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is a model of stability in a very turbulent region and praised President Gligorov for his statesmanship in resolving differences with his neighbors and promoting ethnic tolerance at home.

The President thanked President Gligorov for the hospitable treatment accorded U.S. forces participating in the U.N. Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP) in his country and expressed continuing U.S. support for the stability of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the region as a whole.

The two leaders also reviewed the overall security situation in the south Balkans and the participation of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in NATO's Partnership for Peace.
