TEXT: U.S. COOPERATES WITH GREECE ON COUNTER-TERRORISM

(Renews $2 million reward for identity of terrorists) (370)

Washington -- The United States announced the renewal of its counter- terrorism rewards program as part of its efforts to work in close cooperation with the Government of Greece, where four persons have been killed by terrorists during the last 22 years.

In a statement June 11, State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said, "This program is part of the United States Government's continuing worldwide efforts, both domestic and international, to curtail terrorism and has been in effect in Greece since the law was passed in 1984."

STATEMENT BY NICHOLAS BURNS, SPOKESMAN

GREECE: COUNTER-TERRORISM REWARDS PROGRAM OFFERS RENEWED

The Government of the United States of America, as The program offers up to $2 million for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons or groups who have committed terrorist acts against American individuals or property.

This program is part of the United States Government's continuing worldwide efforts, both domestic and international, to curtail terrorism and has been in effect in Greece since the law was passed in 1984. The Embassy and the Government of United States asks any person who may have knowledge of past or planned terrorist activities to contact the Embassy.

In the past 22 years, terrorist actions in Greece have resulted in the deaths of four Americans: Richard Welch, George Tsantes, William Nordeen, and Ronald Stewart, injuries to 28 other Americans, and a rocket attack on the Embassy compound in February 1996.
