U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE OFFICE OF THE SPOKESMAN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 16, 1997
STATEMENT BY NICHOLAS BURNS, SPOKESMAN
ELECTION LAWS IN ALBANIA
The Albanian Parliament, dominated by President Berisha's Democratic Party,
passed an election law early this morning. Although we have not yet seen
the exact text of the law, it apparently incorporates some of the changes
suggested by Prime Minister Fino and OSCE Personal Representative
Vranitzky. Nevertheless, it was passed without the participation of the
opposition parties.
The United States shares the disappointment of Dr. Vranitzky in the
election gamesmanship by all parties in Albania. All parties failed to make
sufficient effort to reach a compromise.
The United States urges all Albanian political forces to cooperate fully
with Dr. Vranitzky and the OSCE mission.
