TEXT: BURNS STATEMENT MAY 9 ON CYPRUS OVERFLIGHTS

(Turkey will not overfly Cyprus if Greek aircraft do not) (160)

Washington -- Nicholas Burns, spokesman for the State Department, said in a written statement May 9 that the United States welcomes the decision of Cyprus not to invite Greek overflights of Cyprus during Toxotis-Vergina exercise.

Also, Burns said, the United States welcomes the fact that Turkey has no plans to overfly Cyprus as long as Greek aircraft do not.

Following is the text of Burns' statement:

CYPRUS OVERFLIGHTS

The United States welcomes the decision of the Government of Cyprus not to invite Greek aircraft to overfly Cyprus during the Toxotis-Vergina exercise and the information that no other such overflights are planned at this time.

We welcome the information from the Government of Turkey that Turkey has no plans to overfly Cyprus as long as Greek aircraft do not overfly the island.

We believe these separate actions contribute to a better atmosphere for the efforts currently under way under the auspices of the United Nations aimed at a solution of the Cyprus problem.
