STATEMENT BY NICHOLAS BURNS, SPOKESMAN

SPECIAL ADVISOR TARNOFF'S TRAVEL TO EUROPE

Special Advisor to The Secretary and former Under Secretary Peter Tarnoff and a State Department delegation left for Europe on April 20 to consult with our European allies on policy toward Iran. The U.S. delegation will explore with our allies practical steps the international community can take to change Iran's objectionable behavior, including its support for terrorism and pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. The Iranian government's support for terrorism damages both European and U.S. interests.

Special Advisor Tarnoff met on April 21 in The Hague, with Dutch Foreign Minister Van Mierlo, representative of the current EU Presidency. The delegation is in Bonn for meetings today. They will travel to Paris and London before returning to Washington on April 23.

The United States, through its Ambassadors and others, is in high level contact with all of our European partners.
