FACT SHEET: SIGNATORIES AND RATIFIERS OF CWC
(White House on Chemical Weapons Convention) (760)
(The following fact sheet on countries that have signed and ratified the
Chemical Weapons Convention was issued by the White House on April
4.)
Signatories and Ratifiers
The Chemical Weapons Convention will ban the development, production,
acquisition, stockpiling, retention and direct or indirect transfer of
Chemical Weapons. It also prohibits the use or preparation for use of CW
and the assistance, encouragement or inducement of anyone else to engage in
activities prohibited by the CWC.
Key allies have deposited instruments of ratification, including most NATO
members. Within a month of the Sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway,
Japan's Diet ratified the CWC.
Signed by 130 countries in Paris on January 12, 1993, the CWC will enter
into force on April 29, 1997, 180 days after the 65th ratification. As of
March 3, 161 countries have signed the CWC, of which 70 have ratified it.
