TEXT: BURNS' 3/21 STATEMENT ON CONTINUING VIOLENCE IN ALBANIA

(Urges Albanians to work with new government for peace) (210)

Washington -- The U.S. government is "exceedingly concerned" about the continued violence and unrest in Albania and urges Albanians "to demonstrate restraint, reject violence, and work with the new government of national reconciliation to resolve the urgent political, economic, and humanitarian crisis," said State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns.

In a March 21 statement Burns said the United States "firmly supports the efforts of the Fino Government to reestablish government authority."

Following is the text of his statement:

(Begin text)

The U.S. Government is exceedingly concerned about the continued violence and political polarization in Albania. There is no excuse for the violence and outright banditry being perpetrated by unlawful elements throughout the country. We urge all Albanians to demonstrate restraint, reject violence, and work with the new government of national reconciliation to resolve the urgent political, economic, and humanitarian crisis.

The U.S. firmly supports the efforts of the Fino Government to reestablish government authority and we are working actively with our European partners to back the efforts of responsible Albanian leaders to restore peace, stability, and pave the way for early free and fair elections and economic recovery.
