Albright will travel to Greece, Cyprus and Turkey next week "to explore potential opportunities to bring the parties together in order to achieve a comprehensive agreement and a lasting peace in the region."While in Athens July 16 and 17, Ambassador Albright will meet with Greek government officials where, in addition to Cyprus and the Aegean, she will discuss Bosnia and other regional issues. The ambassador will depart July 15 and will be accompanied by Special Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Richard Beattie. Following is the text of a statement by James P. Rubin, spokesman for the ambassador: (Begin text)Ambassador Madeleine K. Albright, in her capacity as U.S. Representative to the United Nations and as a member of the National Security Council and President Clinton's Cabinet, will depart Monday, July 15, for Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. Ambassador Albright will be accompanied by Special Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Richard Beattie.In Athens, Ambassador Albright will meet with Greek government officials on July 16 and 17 where, in addition to Cyprus and the Aegean, she will discuss Bosnia and other regional issues. Ambassador Albright will then travel to Nicosia on July 17 to examine the effectiveness of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Cyprus and to explore potential opportunities to bring the parties together in order to achieve a comprehensive agreement and a lasting peace in the region. From Nicosia, Ambassador Albright will travel to Ankara to meet with Turkish government officials on July 18 and 19 to discuss a variety of bilateral and multilateral issues of importance to the United States and Turkey, including Cyprus, the Aegean, Iraqi oil issues and Operation Provide Comfort. Ambassador Albright will return to the United States on July 20.
