[01] CZECH PRESIDENT MEETS WITH SEZER
Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus yesterday met with President Ahmet
Necdet Sezer. During their talks, the two leaders reportedly discussed ways
to strengthen bilateral ties. The visiting president also expressed his
support for Turkey’s European Union membership bid. Furthermore, Klaus met
with Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc and State Economy Minister Ali
Babacan. /Sabah/
[02] BAD BACK MEANS HOME REST FOR ERDOGAN
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday went to the hospital for a
back spasm, and doctors asked him to stay and rest at home for a few days.
For that reason, his program yesterday including a meeting with the
visiting Czech president was canceled, along with a visit to the
Netherlands scheduled to begin today. On Thursday, Erdogan was supposed to
receive the World Leadership Award bestowed by the Economic Faculty
Association of Rotterdam’s Erasmus University. /Sabah/
[03] GUL: “NO ONE WILL SUCCEED IN DIVIDING TURKEY”
Addressing his party’s group meeting yesterday, Foreign Minister Abdullah
Gul sharply criticized circles supporting terrorist attacks which aim to
divide Turkey. “No one will succeed in dividing our country,” he said. Gul
stated that the government was working hard to overcome the problem of
terrorism with new laws addressing the issue. Stressing that with new Anti-
Terror Law, the government aimed to guarantee freedoms and ensure
confidence and stability in the country, he said, “The law won’t lead to
uneasiness in the nation.” Criticizing the main opposition Republican
People’s Party’s (CHP) opposition to talks on social security reform, Gul
said that the government placed more importance on social policy than the
CHP. “Our social policies are sounder than the CHP’s,” added Gul. /Star/
[04] DURMUS YILMAZ APPOINTED CB GOVERNOR
Durmus Yilmaz, who was re-elected to the Turkish Central Bank Assembly last
week, yesterday became the CB’s new governor. In his first statement to the
press, the governor signalled that the floating exchange rate would
continue. President Ahmet Necdet Sezer yesterday approved the decree
regarding the appointment of Yilmaz. Yilmaz, whose name had not been
previously mentioned as a candidate for the post, has been a member of the
CB Assembly since 2003. /All Papers/
[05] PARLIAMENT PASSES OVER HALF OF ARTICLES OF SOCIAL SECURITY BILL
Parliament yesterday passed 78 articles of the social security bill as part
of the government’s reform package. The bill, which has 122 articles in
total, is being considered in Parliament in six parts. Under the articles
passed yesterday, paying premiums for 9,000 days would be required for
retirement. In related news, the social security reforms aiming to cover a
large deficit have been criticized by some because the reforms are required
under Turkey’s new International Monetary Fund standby deal. Debate on the
bill is expected to finish by late tonight or tomorrow. /Turkiye/
[06] ARINC RECEIVES SEMDINLI COMMISSION HEAD, REPORT
The Parliament Commission investigating last November’s Semdinli incidents
yesterday submitted its report to Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc. Arinc
received commission head Musa Sivacioglu and members at his office and gave
interesting response to criticisms of the commission. “Since the legal
system is established by independent judges, in my view, it’s not right to
try to find grounds for accusing this or that person over an indictment,”
he said. “This case is very important for Turkey. I want to expose those
who turned 180 degrees by using a prosecutor’s indictment as an excuse
after having said, ‘Everyone will be investigated until the end, the
culprits will be punished’.” /Aksam/
[07] BAYKAL: “ERDOGAN IS ALWAYS FIGHTING SOMEONE”
Speaking at his party’s group meeting yesterday, main opposition Republican
People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal compared Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan to the “amok runner” from a book by 20th century German
writer Stefan Zweig. “The prime minister is always yelling and shouting; he
looks like someone who’s boxing in front of a mirror,” Baykal told deputies
at his party group meeting in Parliament. “He’s constantly fighting with
the president, media, universities, and the judiciary. He’s just like an
amok runner who attacks everyone with their spear.” Baykal reiterated his
support for President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who recently warned about rising
reactionary activities, claming that Erdogan is greatly disturbed by
Sezer’s remarks. /The New Anatolian/
[08] WILSON, ZAPSU DISCUSS TURKISH-US RELATIONS
US Ambassador to Ankara Ross Wilson yesterday visited Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan’s advisor Cuneyt Zapsu. Wilson and Zapsu reportedly
discussed Turkish-US relations. Afterwards, neither spoke to the press.

[09] PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT TO VISIT TURKEY NEXT WEEK
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will pay a visit to Turkey next week to
discuss the situation in the region after of the formation of a new
Palestinian government led by radical group Hamas. Abbas will meet with
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul during his two-day stay starting Monday.

[10] ISTANBUL TO HOST WORLD BUSINESSWOMEN’S FORUM
The Turkish Businesswomen’s Association is planning to welcome
international world businesswomen in Istanbul for a meeting. During the
gathering at the Ciragan Palace, leading women figures from various
countries will discuss women’s situation in their societies and seek ways
to enhance their public roles. /Sabah/

[12] A PORTRAIT OF ANKARA BY ISMAIL KUCUKKAYA (AKSAM)
Columnist Ismail Kucukkaya offers his view of Ankara and its politics. A
summary of his column is as follows:
“While the government is in its fourth year, we see that a balance has
settled in the Cabinet. I met with Health Minister Recep Akday yesterday
and spoke with him about the changes in the healthcare system. He brought
up many interesting and important facts. He told me that the number of
physicians in Turkey now, 100,000, is insufficient and so this figure
should be at least doubled. We spoke about the problems and aims of the
health system. It’s not easy for people to understand that radical changes
were made to the health and social security system. However, everybody who
visits a hospital realizes this. I was scared when I saw Industry and
Commerce Minister Ali Coskun’s schedule for this week. It’s like he geared
up. He’s been attending many conferences and meetings. Particularly his
visits to Anatolian provinces are getting attention. I saw the same thing
in other ministers as well. It seems they recently started to place more
importance on visits. I suggested that Coskun should speak about this to
the public. If this happened, it would be very interesting.
When we were at the Opera House two days ago, Culture and Tourism Minister
Atilla Koc gave an award to architect Turgut Cansever. When Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan felt ill, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul attended the
ceremony. It seems that Ankara is making peace with culture and tourism
again. I visited Education Minister Huseyin Celik to see what he has been
doing. There have been radical changes in our educational system and
certain modern applications were brought in. Instead of criticizing, it
would be more useful to see what were done. I advise everybody to see the
new schools. Meanwhile, the public was never informed about the change of
curriculum.
Now let’s have a look at the economy. I met with Deputy Prime Minister
Abdullatif Sener a few days ago. He was in high spirits and he rattled off
figures in detail. As the economic balance is settled, Finance Minister
Kemal Unakitan, State Minister for the Economy Ali Babacan and Sener feel
happy as well. As they’re responsible for the economy, they are the ones
who are glad the most that macroeconomic balances are settled. I wanted to
show you a picture of Ankara. Politics are growing warm, and the Cabinet is
harmonizing with this.”
