[01] ERDOGAN, TALAT CALL FOR AN END TO TURKISH CYPRIOTS’ ISOLATION
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat have called on the
international arena to end the isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriots.
Erdogan and Talat’s statements came on Saturday at a joint press conference
following their bilateral meeting in Istanbul. While Erdogan took a firm
stance on the issue saying, “Turkey will not do anything unless Turkish
Cypriots’ isolation ends,” Talat’s appeared to be hopeful when he said,
“The isolation of the Turkish Cypriots will come to an end we’ll integrate
into the world.” Calling on all the relevant parties to put an end to the
isolation of Turkish Cypriots, Erdogan said, “We’re determined to protect
the rights of the Turkish Cypriots and cooperate with the TRNC authorities
to this end. Despite the negative attitude of the Greek Cypriot
administration, we advocate a fair and lasting solution on the island.”

[02] PREMIER ERDOGAN: “EARLY ELECTIONS WOULD BE A TREASON OF THE PUBLIC”
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday attended to a party meeting.
Premier Erdogan touched on many issues as the ruling Justice and
Development Party (AKP) organization, early election debates, economic
developments and opposition parties’ criticisms. He challenged the media by
saying that it can deceive neither the public nor him and said, “Recep
Tayyip Erdogan isn’t a premier who listens to his public through media, he
is a prime minister who directly meets with people to listen to their
complaints. We’re always with the public. We listen to them, not the
media.” Also touching on early election debates, Erdogan said that early
elections would be a treason of the public that carried the AKP to power.
“The opposition parties are running towards a dead end regarding their
political career,” said Erdogan and claimed that the reason for their
persistent calls for early elections is this fear. /Star/
[03] GUL VISITS RIO DE JANEIRO

American countries, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul yesterday completed his
four-day visit to Brazil. On his last day of stay, Gul accompanied by his

[04] AGAR CRITICIZES GOVT BEING OPPOSED TO EARLY ELECTIONS
Opposition True Path Party (DYP) leader Mehmet Agar yesterday criticized
the government being opposed to early elections. In a written statement,
Agar stated that the government officials had said that early elections
would harm Turkey’s atmosphere of trust and stability, which is not true.
“If you’re serving the nation, then why are you afraid of early elections?”
asked Agar. “You can’t betray the nation.” Last week, Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan stated that holding early elections would mean to betray the
nation. /Milliyet/
[05] AYDIN GUVEN GURKAN PASSES AWAY

years. /Turkiye/

BIRD FLU CRISIS CENTER THERE
A 12-person US delegation chaired by US State Department official Ann Derse,
yesterday arrived in Van in order to begin examinations on recent bird flu
incidents. The delegation, which is composed of specialists from the
International Health Agency and the State Department, later visited bird
flu crisis center in Van to get information about recent developments on
the issue and met with representatives from several institutions. Van
Deputy Governor Mustafa Yavuz said that the delegation was working in
coordination with all institutions in Van and that a delegation from the
World Health Organization (WHO) was also following the work closely. “Our

[10] REHN ADDRESSES CONFERENCE AT LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, SAYS EU TO
BENEFIT TURKEY’S DYNAMISM
Addressing a conference at London School of Economics yesterday, European
Union Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn said that the expanding
process was indispensable for the EU, adding that this process was very
active for now. Rehn said that in 2005 EU member states grew more than in
the past, when the number of EU members was fewer. Rehn stated that the
growth rate in EU candidates such as Turkey and Romania was even higher.
“Turkey grew by 9% last year,” said Rehn, adding that the EU would benefit
from this dynamism which would provide new opportunities. “We shouldn’t
forget that Turkey would contribute to overcome the EU’s demographic
imbalance in the future,” he said. Rehn further stressed that the EU
candidates would join the Union after fulfilling the required criteria.

[11] EU COMMISSION TURNS GREEN LIGHT TO BEGIN ACTUAL NEGOTIATIONS WITH
TURKEY
European Union Commission yesterday turned green light to begin Turkey’s
actual negotiations on certain issues, the screening process of which was
completed. The Commission presented a report to both Turkey and to the
Council of Europe to begin actual negotiations with Turkey on “Science and
Research” and “Education and Culture.” The report further stated that there
was no obstacle to begin negotiations on these issues. The approval of all
EU member states is a must to begin actual negotiations with Ankara.

[12] ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO BE SENT TO TURKEY
The European Union is continuing to search new measures for the illegal
immigrant problem. To send the immigrants to the countries, the EU
negotiations of which are continuing, is assessed as the first choice.
According to this rapprochement, immigrants might be sent to especially
Croatia and Turkey. At the ‘EU’s Shelter Policies” section of the EU
justice and interior ministers’ meeting held on Jan. 12-14, migration and
immigrant problem was debated. After the meeting, it was decided that
immigrants entering or trying to enter the EU countries should be captured
and be sent to the candidate EU countries in case that they don’t want to
be sent back to their countries. /Cumhuriyet/

[14] ERDOGAN VISITS PICASSO EXHIBITION BY TUFAN TURENC (HURRIYET)
Columnist Tufan Turenc comments on the Justice and Development Party (AKP)
and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A summary of his column is as
follows:
“Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the Picasso exhibition in
Istanbul, which is pleasing. After he visited the exhibition, he evaluated
Picasso and gave messages of ‘development and change.’ He said, ‘Picasso
has been the representative of a continuously developing and changing
movement. When we see his works, we should deal with development and
change. It would be useful to benefit from this.’ Thus, he made references
to the people who believe that he hasn’t and won’t change. Let’s say that
he visited the Picasso exhibition not to give this message with the
suggestions of his staff. Whatever the reason is, Erdogan’s meeting with
Picasso can be accepted as a stage, because when he was the mayor, he made
such evaluations that he finds ballet amoral. Who knows, maybe he will
watch Giselle, performed by Istanbul State Ballet. Now, I want to write
about something other than art, for example, the bird flu. There was such
an impression in the public that Erdogan didn’t deal with the bird flu for
a long time. He even said that the crisis isn’t managed by discussing.
However, he found it appropriate to talk about the bird flu during his
party’s group meeting last week. He said that the government was struggling
against the disease greatly and successfully and that the measures were
complete. He praised relevant ministries’ work. However, I couldn’t
understand why the disease became widespread in Turkey so much, although
measures were taken.
Even if Erdogan doesn’t accept, it seems to me that mistakes were made on
the issue. Perhaps, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) has some
difficulties with administering Turkey. I think it will suffer more
difficulties, as long as the problems increase. For example, we see that
the Cyprus issue was left to its own fate. Some people drove former
President Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) out, on grounds that
he hinders the solution. Now, they are helpless, aren’t they? Nobody knows
what will happen from now on. How will the obstacles of Germany and France
be overcome? What’s Turkey’s policy in the formations in northern Iraq, in
terms of the tension between the US and Iraq? Does the AKP have a horizon
or strategy about the place to bring Turkey during the 21st century? Will
there be a consensus about the presidency? Or will the people insist that a
person representing the AKP’s views should be the president? Before holding
an election, will Erdogan take it into consideration that he received one
vote from four citizens and three seats out of four at the Parliament? Will
he be able to see that this power won’t be enough for the person to be the
president to sit comfortably on that seat?”
