  • [01] ERDOGAN: “TURKEY HAS THE RIGHT TO CONDUCT CROSS-BORDER OPERATIONS AGAINST THE PKK”

Speaking on his way back from visiting Russia and Mongolia, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday said that the terrorist group PKK was trying to survive, adding that the group would reach its aim if the media focuses too much on its attacks. “We’ll continue to take measures against the PKK,” said Erdogan, adding that Turkey had the right to conduct operations across the border into Iraq against the PKK. “In fighting terrorism, measures are needed economically, socially and culturally,” said the premier, adding that terror couldn’t be prevented by security measures alone. “We’re trying to embrace the region’s citizens by creating job opportunities for them,” added Erdogan. The premier stressed that terrorism shouldn’t be used as a political weapon, and criticized other party leaders’ approaches to the issue. “I want to meet with other party leaders to discuss ways to fight terrorism,” said Erdogan, adding that everyone in Turkey should help in this fight. /Turkiye/

[02] GUL MEETS IRISH FM, DISCUSSES CROSS-BORDER OPERATIONS AGAINST THE PKK

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul yesterday met with visiting Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern to discuss a number of issues, including bilateral relations and a possible operation across the Iraqi border against the terrorist PKK. Later, speaking at a joint press conference, Gul said that no decision had been made on the cross-border operation issue. “If one country harms another, the United Nations has resolutions to help prevent this,” said Gul, adding that no country could turn a blind eye to such harm. Asked about the US opposition to Turkish cross-border operations against the PKK, Gul said that every country has the right to make decisions by itself on vital issues. /Hurriyet/

[03] GEN. BASBUG: “A CROSS-BORDER OPERATION IS ONE OF OUR LAST RESORTS TO FIGHT THE PKK”

Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug said yesterday that the US had directly ordered the capture of the leaders of the terrorist group PKK. Speaking at a press briefing, Basbug said that in the fight against terrorism, it was very important to act in league with the media. “Since terrorism is multidimensional, it is important not to ignore reasons fomenting terrorism besides armed struggle,” said Basbug. “We can’t overcome this problem through armed struggle alone, we also need to take other measures.” Touching on recent US comments opposing a cross-border operation against the PKK, Basbug stressed that Ankara considered UN Security Council resolutions important in this regard. “The US intends to do something against the PKK, but it hasn’t made a definite decision concerning just what to do,” he said, adding that the US officials had recently said that they understood Ankara’s concerns. Basbug stressed that a cross-border operation would be a last resort in fighting the PKK. Basbug further suggested that an anti-terror unit should be established under the Prime Ministry. /Aksam/

[04] TALAT: “TURKISH CYPRIOTS HAVE ENTERED A HISTORIC ERA”

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat said yesterday that the Turkish Cypriots had entered a historic new era, adding that Azerbaijan’s recent decision to begin direct flights to the TRNC was encouraging. “These flights will be a symbol of ending the TRNC’s isolation,” said Talat, adding that the Greek Cypriots favored division of the island and that the United Nations had also confirmed this. “Ending the TRNC’s isolation will also pave the way for Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos to sit at the negotiating table,” said Talat. “We Turkish Cypriots want reunification.” /Cumhuriyet/

[05] AKSU: “WE WILL DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT OUR SOIL”

Protecting Turkish soil and national sovereignty is a priority issue to us like all other nation-states, Interior Ministry Abdulkadir Aksu said yesterday in Istanbul, addressing the opening session of the second meeting of the interior ministers of Iraq’s neighboring countries. “Turkey has always done its utmost to protect its territory and will always do so,” he declared. “Countries should unite to fight terrorists. Turkey has recently been attacked by the terrorist PKK, which is still active in northern Iraq. We must ensure the security of our borders. To stop terrorist activities, we should take effective security measures along our borders.” Aksu’s words were interpreted as a response to certain US officials who recently made remarks opposing a possible cross-border military operation into northern Iraq by Turkey. /Star/

[06] IRAQI INTERIOR MINISTER: “WE WANT TO END THE PRESENCE OF TERRORIST GROUPS, INCLUDING THE PKK”

Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabr, who is currently in Ankara to attend the second meeting of the interior ministers of countries neighboring Iraq, said yesterday that Iraq wanted to end the presence of the terrorist PKK as well as other terrorist groups in Iraq. “Turkey, Iraq, and the US will soon hold a tripartite meeting,” said Jabr, adding that definite decisions would be made at the meeting. /Milliyet/

[07] US STATE DEPARTMENT: “THE PKK IS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION”

US State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said yesterday that Washington’s position on the PKK was clear, as the Bush administration considers it a terrorist organization. “We work closely with Turkey and with Iraq in preventing the use of Iraqi territory by the PKK for its activities,” he said at a daily press briefing in Washington. “We will continue to have good and close coordination with the authorities in both countries on what is a commonly shared problem.” Asked whether the US military has issued a direct order to arrest top leaders of PKK in northern Iraq, Ereli declined to comment, telling reporters that they should address that question to the Defense Department, since it deals with military issues. /Hurriyet/

[09] TERROR BRIEFING BY OKTAY EKSI (HURRIYET)

Columnist Oktay Eksi comments on Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug’s briefing yesterday. A summary of his column is as follows:

“Yesterday, Gen. Ilker Basbug, deputy chief of general staff, made, in my opinion, the best-organized remarks ever on the issue of terrorism and Turkey’s fight with terrorists. I believe Gen. Basbug both offered a realistic evaluation of the status quo and suggested that the government develop a combat strategy in line with the principles of the rule of law.

In other words, Gen. Basbug could have made meaningless and unrealistic remarks but he didn’t. Instead, he chose to tell reporters about the number of terrorists in Turkey, their income sources, cultural levels and social conditions. Gen. Basbug presented detailed and extensive information on terrorism. He particularly stressed that while 60% of terrorists had not received any education, 75% were also unemployed. ‘We should first solve the problems of unemployment and ignorance to be able to fight terrorism more efficiently,’ he urged.

Gen. Basbug also called on the Turkish media not to use words and expressions which could encourage terrorists while discouraging and frightening citizens. I believe this is a quite reasonable request.

He also criticized some intellectual figures for using the words ‘Turkish’ and ‘Kurdish’ in a tendentious manner. I personally agree with his criticism. We make a grave mistake when we use terms such as ‘Kurdish nation.’ In other words, by using such biased words, we, with our own hands, create a separate group in our society which should be considered a whole.”
