[27] FROM THE COLUMNS...FROM THE COLUMNS...FROM THE COLUMNS...

[28] DOUBLE STANDARDS IN EUROPE BY ORHAN BIRGIT (CUMHURIYET)

Columnist Orhan Birgit comments on the double standards of Europe. A summary of his column is as follows:

" In Italy, the 'Democrats for the Left' (Democratici di Sinistra), the 'Communist Refoundation Party' (Rifondazione Communista) and the 'Italian Communist Party' demand the brand new center-right Government of Berlusconi to resign. The Government was formed following the recent elections. The reason given for this demand by the communist parties is to eliminate the danger of the division of Italy! Both the Chairman of the Italian Communist Party, Cosutta and the leader of the Communist Refoundation Party, Berniotti state that Italy is faced with the danger of division due to a speech delivered by Secessionist Northern Union party leader Umberto Bossi at the party Congress. Bossi, who is the Minister responsible for reforms in the Berlusconi Cabinet, during his speech at the conference held in Pontia, said that he took an oath in line with the Constitution not for Italy and Italians but instead for the Republic of Padania and the freedom of her people. He added that one day a federation would be formed and they would secede from Italy.

The communists were all up in arms on these words. However, as in all parts of the world, it was believed that Italian communists blamed those sensitive to nationalistic statements to have taken their place in the right. In fact, when Abdullah Ocalan who had formed a terrorist organization in Turkey, with secessionist purposes was in question, they raced with each other to protect him. It is also known that those same people supported Leyla Zana and her friends when they were engaged in similar actions. Zana and her friends had entered the Parliament in the 1991 Election."

[29] HOW IT FEELS WHEN IT'S YOUR TURN BY OKTAY EKSI (HURRIYET)

Columnist Oktay Eksi comments on recent reaction shown by the Communists to THE Northern Union Party (Lega Norda) leader's speech. A summary of his column is as follows:

"We fail to understand why Italians are so angered by these words... All hell broke loose when the leader of the Northern union Party Umberto Bossi, in a speech he delivered at a party congress held in Pontia said, 'I took an oath before President Carlo Azeglia Ciampi for the Padania Republic'. So much so that 'Democrats for the Left', 'Communist Refoundation Party' and the Italian Communist Party ' harshly reacted to this statement. Saying that the territorial integrity of the country was in danger, they demanded the resignation of the Berlusconi Government. You may recall that some time ago extreme liberals in Turkey vehemently defended Umberto Bossi. They said that political parties could be based on ethnic roots, regions or they may even be secessionist. ... They brought the argument that no one was saying anything to the political party led by Umberto Bossi. Even though Bossi was saying that one day they would secede from Italy and form their own Republic, no one raised his voice. They maintained that we should be able to allow such behavior. In that case, both Turkish democracy would develop and our credibility would rise. We are talking about the same Umberto Bossi.

You may recall that when we were discussing these issues, Abdullah Ocalan had taken shelter in Italy. Today, those who are furious with Bossi and therefore calling the Berlusconi Government to resign, all defended both Ocalan and the PKK supporters he had managed to get into the Parliament at the time. When division concerned Turkey, there was no problem. At the time, Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, in a statement on Ocalan's request for political asylum said that this was a good opportunity to give the rights all peoples deserved... If Umberto Bossi's words only expressed his desire and was not meant to influence anyone, no one would say anything. However, when he got stronger and talked about the Padania Republic after taking part in the coalition Government they were awakened. Nevertheless, there is no need to worry, everyone gets wiser sooner or later. "
