[01] HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH'S LETTER TO ITALIAN PREMIER
According to the semi-official Anatolia news agency the Human
Rights Watch sent on Saturday a letter to Italian Prime Minister
Massimo D'Alema saying that Abdullah Ocalan, the chief of
terrorist organization PKK who was captured in Italy last week,
should be judged with the accusation of committing crimes against
humanity. Holly Cartner, the chairman of Executive Board of Human
Rights Watch's Department of Europe and Central Asia, pointed out
in the letter that Ocalan should not be granted with political
asylum in accordance with the Status of Refugees Agreement signed
in 1951. Cartner stressed that Ocalan should account for the
brutality which he caused in Turkey. Noting that those who commit
crimes against humanity cannot be granted with the political
asylum, Cartner called Italy to send Ocalan to a country which
will charge and judge Ocalan within the framework of
international laws, if she does not want to judge him.
Calling Italy to bring Ocalan to justice or send him to another
country where he will be judged, Cartner also added that they
support extradition of Ocalan to Turkey.
[02] DEMIREL CRITICIZES ITALY
President Suleyman Demirel criticized Italy yesterday and said:
"No country can let armed people walk around on its territories
and kill its citizens. No country sits with these people at the
same table. A leader of a terrorist organization cannot take
shelter. No one can tolerate a murderer, who killed 30,000
people". President Demirel, Transport Minister Arif Ahmet
Denizolgun and Head of the Higher Education Institution (YOK)
Kemal Gurbuz attended opening ceremonies of some facilities in
Adana yesterday. Demirel and Denizolgun first opened the Domestic
Lines Therminal of Adana Airport, which costed TL 1 trillion.
Demirel noted that Turkey needed new investments every day.

[03] OCALAN ASKS FOR SUPPORT
The La Repubblica newspaper which is working like an official
publication of the PKK terrorist organization in Italy, stated
that the chief of the PKK sent a letter to Pope John Paul II,
asking to be received by him. Ocalan proposed the Pope to work
together against Turkey for the Kurdish cause within the
framework of peace and justice. According to the newspaper Ocalan
complained Turkey to the Pope and told why he came to Italy.

[04] PROTEST MEETING IN US
In a "Protesting Italy" meeting organized in New York by the
Turkish-American Associations' Federation two days ago, the
Italian government was denounced for "supporting terrorism". The
meeting was held in front of the UN Permanent Representation of
Italy, where a group of Turks and Americans of Turkish origin
expressed that the Republic of Turkey, as founded by Ataturk,
will live forever in unity and solidarity.
Dr. Ata Erim, the President of the Turkish-American Associations,
said that the PKK carries out outrageous activities not only
within the borders of Turkey but also in different regions of the
world. On the other hand, Egemen Bagis, who organized the meeting
as the General Secretary of the Federation, invited Italy to
cooperate with the international society and to use the same
standards with the US in the struggle against terrorism. It is
reported that Turks living in the US will hold similar meetings
in Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] GALATASARAY-JUVENTUS MATCH POSTPONED BY UEFA
Due to Italians' application concerning the protest meetings in
Turkey, the Executive Committee of UEFA convened yesterday to
take up the fate of the Galatasaray-Juventus match to be played
on November 25. As the Committee could not achieve a final
decision, the 15 members of the Executive Board were called to
the meeting. The Italian representative demanded that the match
be taken to another country because of security reasons. After
continuous discussions, the Executive Board postponed a match for
the first time in its history and decided it to be played on
December 2. Both the Turkish Football Federation and the
Galatasaray administration denounced the decision while the
club's vice president Donat said that they may boycott the match.

[06] WARNING TO MED-TV
Independent Television Commission (ITC), an organization which
controls broadcasts of tv stations in England, warned the
terrorist organization's TV station MED-TV. The warning said:
"The TV channel will be closed if it acts against broadcasting
principles within six months." ITC reminded those who are
responsible for MED-TV broadcasts that they had been warned in
the past that their news and programmes encouraged violence and
terrorism. /Sabah/
[07] D'ALEMA: "OCALAN IS THE ISSUE OF EUROPE"
Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema said in his weekly press
conference that Abdullah Ocalan was not the problem of Italy and
Turkey but also the whole Europe. He pointed out that during his
visits to France, Spain and Germany next week, he would discuss
Ocalan issue with the primiers of these countries. D'Alemo
pointed out that Abdullah Ocalan's deportation to any country was
out of question, adding that only Turkey and Germany were the
countries that he might be deported. /Sabah/
[08] LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER IN TURKEY
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Algirdas Saugardas arrived in Turkey
yesterday as the official guest of his Turkish counterpart Ismail
Cem. Saugardas attended a meeting of the Turkish-Lithuanian
Business Council and then visited the historical and touristic
sites in Istanbul. Saugardas and an accompanying delegation
proceeded on to Ankara yesterday night, the Anatolia news agency
reports.
[09] DERVISOGLU IN BRUSSELS
Naval Forces Commander Admiral Salim Dervisoglu went to Brussels,
Belgium, yesterday. According to a statement issued by the
General Secretariat of Naval Forces Command, Admiral Dervisoglu,
who will participate in a meeting of the European Allied Force
Commanders, will also make official contacts there. Dervisoglu
will return to Turkey on November 26, the Anatolia news agency
reports.
[10] ANTALYA CONFERENCE
"Antalya Conference" will be held in the Kemer district of
Antalya on November 26-28. The conference carries great
importance to deepen relations among European, Caucasian and
Central Asian countries. The conference will be headed by former
Deputy Prime Minister Prof.Erdal Inonu and British
Parliamentarian Sir Malcolm Rifkind. Turkish Parliament Speaker
Hikmet Cetin will be the honorary guest. Nearly 30 participants
from Britain, 10 from European, 10 from Caucasian countries and
30 participants from Turkey will attend the conference, the
Anatolia news agency reports.
[11] GEN.KILIC IN BAKU
Air Forces Commander Gen.Ilhan Kilic went to Baku, Azerbaijan,
yesterday to make contacts with Azeri officials. Gen.Kilic, who
is also expected to be received by Azeri President Haydar Aliyev
today, will also make observations at some military facilities.
Gen.Kilic will return to Turkey on November 25, the Anatolia news
agency reports.
[12] SECOND DEMIRBANK OFFICE IN ROMANIA
Demirbank (Romania) SA company announced that they would open a
bank office in Constanta, Romanian city at the Black Sea coast.
Officials noted that the capital of the bank was $ 8 million and
it would give service especially in investment banking. /Sabah/
[13] DRUG OPERATION
Istanbul Security Chief Hasan Ozdemir has stated that in a depot
used as a heroin workshop in the Kucukcekmece district of
Istanbul, chemical materials utilized to produce drugs have been
seized. Ozdemir said that the chemical materials have been
brought from Macedonia to Turkey by illegal means. /Milliyet/
[14] TRADE SUMMIT IN MITYLENE
Turkish and Greek businessmen gathered in the Mitylene island of
Greece to achieve peace and develop trade in Aegean Sea. The
First Turkish Aegean Coasts and Greek Aegean Islands Economic
Summit organized by Izmir Chamber of Commerce (ITO) and Mitylene
Chamber of Trade and Industry was held on November 21-22. Many
businessmen and local administrators from the ITO, Aydin,
Edremit, Ayvalik, Burhaniye, Fethiye, Milas and Selcuk districts
of Turkey and from Mitylene, the islands of Chios (Sakiz) and
Samos (Sisam) of Greece participated in the summit. /Milliyet/
[15] JOURNALIST GOKMEN DIES
Journalist and writer from the Hurriyet daily newspaper Yavuz
Gokmen died because of pneumonia yesterday. Gokmen, who was born
in Manisa in 1946, graduated from the Law Faculty of Ankara

[16] SCHROEDER: "EU DOOR IS OPEN FOR TURKEY"
German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder received Turkish
Ambassador to Bonn Tugay Ulucevik yesterday and noted that the
door of the European Union (EU) was open for Turkey. Schroeder
stated that during the EU term-presidency of Germany, they would
exert efforts for the enlargement of the EU. Schroeder and German
Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer received the ambassadors of the
countries in Germany at the Schaumburg Palace in Bonn yesterday.

[17] LETTER FROM SIMITIS TO KLERIDES
Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in a letter he sent to Greek
Cypriot Leader Glafkos Klerides requested him not to deploy
Russian-made S-300 missiles on the island. Greek Cypriot
Television RIK in its news said that Simitis sent a letter to
Klerides stating that he was opposed to the deployment of the
S-300 missiles on the island. The reasons for such a request were
explained as regional developments, Turkish warnings, the US
stand, and the process of full-membership to the EU. /Hurriyet/
[18] IMKB STARTS WEEK WITH RISE
The Istanbul Stock Exchange Market (IMKB) rose Monday at the end
of the second session of trading to end the day at 2561.81
points, up nearly 230 points from the week before. Share prices
earned 5.8 percent on average. /Hurriyet/
[19] SECURITY FORCES KILL 23 TERRORISTS IN SOUTHEAST
The security forces killed 23 members of PKK in recent clashes in
various parts of the Southeast. A statement by regional officials
in Diyarbakir said that the clashes were going on for several
days in the provinces of Hakkari, Batman, Bingol, Tunceli and
Sirnak. Operations were still underway, the officials said.
Meanwhile, according to Education Ministry figures, 138 teachers
have been killed in the southeat by the PKK since 1987. Ministry
officials said that another 15 people killed in the region were
Education Ministry staff.
